Defenceless Vidot banned for two weeks

Defenceless Vidot banned for two weeks

03 Sep, 2009 07:45 AM
Canberra Raiders winger Daniel Vidot had a ''busted'' knuckle on his right hand that prevented him defending himself with his fists during the fight that cost him a two-game suspension.

Vidot pleaded guilty to a grade-three contrary conduct charge yesterday for attempting to knee Newcastle forward Ben Rogers during the Raiders' 30-14 win on Monday night.

It means he will miss the Raiders' final NRL game of the season against Brisbane on Sunday night, as well as the club's Toyota Cup qualifying final the following week.

Vidot will only play again this year if his under-20s teammates can win that game.

Rogers accepted a three-week suspension for landing a flurry of punches on Vidot's head.

Raiders chief executive Don Furner said the 19-year-old was shattered that he wouldn't be able to play in front of a large contingent of family and friends at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium.

Furner said the Raiders' poor record at the judiciary, combined with the fact the club hoped its Toyota Cup team would go beyond the first week of the finals, had prompted the early guilty plea.

While he admitted the footage of the incident ''didn't look good'' for Vidot, Furner said the youngster had been unable to defend himself properly from Rogers' attack because of players holding him back and his ''busted finger''.

''He couldn't really defend himself and the other bloke kept coming at him,'' Furner said.

Why do they call it a Judiciary? Players leant on the plead guilty to get leniency - the minds often made up before there is any evidence and an inconsistency rate that is so breathtaking as to amount to incompetancy. It is nothing more than a Kangaroo Court - vigilante justice at its finest: "We're gonna give ya a fair trial, then we're gonna hang ya"

So Alan tounge gets smashed while not in possesion, breaks 2 ribs and Taluapapa gets NOTHING!. Daniel Vidot attempts to defend himself from a barrage of punches, instigated by another player and He is the one who gets punished... There is no sense at all... John, I think your insulting Kangaroo's with your reference, these blokes are pelicans!!!

I agree that the Newcastle players act was out of line and cowardly. Vidot was never going to get away with using a modern fighting technique (knee) which is totally exceptable in martial situations in a game that uses old fashion pugilistic techniques when a stink arises. It has been great seeing the green machine play with some fire and passion. Here is hoping that mcrone and Campese develop further for next year as by the look of it there will be no room for buying players. Look forward to fensom getting some time next year as well, he has been playing well for Souths Logan. All is well if the raiders can keep this crop together for 4 or 5 years.
