Dog of a finish for brave Raiders

Dog of a finish for brave Raiders

27 Apr, 2009 10:00 AM
Canberra Raiders coach David Furner knows he's starting to sound like a broken record.

It's becoming an all-too common routine in his short coaching career: go to the footy, coach his team, then walk into the post-match press conference and talk about how the Raiders fought bravely, were in the contest to the end, but failed to come away with the competition points.

Yesterday it was the same story. The Raiders played hard and at times exciting football, led early, fought back late, but ultimately fell short in a 30-20 loss to the Bulldogs.

FANCY ALLOWING TERRY TO PLAY INJURED AND VOMITING BEFORE KICK OFF. WHAT A STUPID MOVE.

If we look at the bigger view what was building the last year or two with Henry and Carney has changed significantly. In essence the raiders are building again. While not enjoying the close losses there are still bright signs that the group can acheive something, the key point that they stay together. I would like to see the current squad stay together for a couple of years to continue buiding on the excellent work that was started by Henry and the team of last year. We must sign Campese, Leroyd lars, the young guys coming through and get him some support for the other side of the ruck (though Mcrone showed promise). Stick together and go the green machine.

I agree with u J. Sadly the raiders seems to be a little short of the mark this year...ppl know about terry and know he is the main player..hopefully Mcrone can help with some heat but i bet he wishes he knocked that ball over yesterday, it might have made a difference. Agree resign the up coming players dont let them go like HORSE...Maybe even try and fit Mike Monaghan some where in the mix too. Come on Don lets build the club back to where your dad had it.

Highly respected Sydney journalist Paul Kent drew attention in a sports comment last year how the Raiders NEVER get the benefit of the doubt in 50-50 calls. Nothing has changed. And yesterday, as in some past instances, it affected the result of the game. Since when does a clear knock back become a knock on in the eyes of a video referee who couldn't make it as an NRL referee? Joel Monaghan's TRY after John McRone's rake back could have made it 18-nil and probably would have given the Raiders the two points. Hey, come on game officials, all we ask for is the same fair crack of the whip that most of our opponents always seem to enjoy.

The Raiders have lost there potency in attack. Last year they were able to chance there arm, run the ball with purpose(even before there big purple patch). Different story this year. They had the dogs on toast a few times yesterday but couldn't find the spread, they had the ball 3 times in the Dogs zone when it was 24-20 and couldn't manage not even a repeat set. Fighting bravley doesnt give you a habbit of winning, maybe the coaching staff arn't pushing the right buttons. It could be a long season ahead.

What can better can we expect? We are playing TC players in the NRL! We are playing players with injuries because we have no depth! We are using a coach who only got the job 'cos no-one else would take it! We cannot attract 'marquis players' to the ACT! We have no 'ball-playing,off-loading, line-breaking' forwards! These "2 pm starts" are supposed to be to assist Fox Sport broadcasts but in reality they are allowing visiting teams to play in conditions that suit them rather than us! We've even lost what was previously our 'home town advantage' and soon the Raiders will stop drawing crowds. Some of the Canberra Cup games are more satisfying to watch!

i have saved that article by paul kent and yes ronn you are dead right! we NEVER get the rub of the green its becoming ridiculous!!!! you also forgot to mention that bulldogs scored off a foward pass yesterday wen the game was in the balance. last week zillman was offside and scored!!!!!! it happens week after week year after year and i for one am sick of it!! someone upstairs has something against the raiders!! and it needs to be bought to the attention of everbody! i have kept a booklet and right down everytime we are dudded! and believe me im running out of pages. and thats only this year! just because we are tipped to get the wooden spoon doesnt mean we have to be cheated out of winning! ive had ENOUGH

Raiders are just bad this year, If you look at the game last night we just did not have the impact players to finish off the buldogs with campo down. We cant really blame injury cus most of the injured players are back now we just dont have the strike power this year and the recruitment is terrible only have dissent buy was harrison the rest are terrible. Raiders will never be able to get good buys as no one wants to come to ACT so we always pick up drop outs like costigan who was good for us or players that are not wanted by other teams. It will be long year for raiders as we can not even win at home anymore.

I believe we have a premiership team in the making. Not 2009 but within the next two to five years. We need to sign Campese long term and also young Josh Dugan. If we can afford Michael Monaghan under the salary cap and at the same time retain our young rising stars then I believe the Raiders are on a good thing. Michael Monaghan with his experience in the key positions would be the perfect person to lead the team around the park when Campese, the hooker or the half are not available. We had the same problem years ago when Ricky Stuart was unavailable. We should be proud to support a team that puts in every week. They may not be winning enough at the moment but the coach and the players are hard workers and committed to success.
