Finals bid electrifies Raiders medal night

09 Sep, 2010 09:42 AM
There was undeniable feeling in the air at the Canberra Raiders' Mal Meninga Medal dinner last night.

Excitement.

The Raiders are preparing themselves for a serious charge to the NRL premiership, beginning with their qualifying final against the Penrith Panthers at CUA Stadium on Saturday night.

Coach David Furner has been rewarded for his team's late season form by being named as the Australian assistant coach.

Kangaroos head coach Tim Sheens asked for Furner to assist during the end of year Four Nations tournament, having been impressed as Furner's team surged into the finals.

But prop David Shillington was the centre of attention at last night's dinner. Just 24 hours after being crowned the best prop in the NRL, he was rewarded for his outstanding Raiders season when he collected the Meninga Medal.

  • Countrylink is running services to and from CUA Stadium at a cost of $55 per person. Call 6208 9703. Bookings close at 3pm today. About 16,000 tickets had been sold for the game mid-yesterday afternoon, with about 6500 still available. Tickets available through Ticketek online at ticketek.com.au, or by telephoning 13 28 49.

Furner, I knocked you when the team wasn't going well. Sorry for that. Congratulations on your selection. This is a massive achievement

I wasn't sure about David Furner earlier on, but he and the team have grown together to show what a determined fighting force they have become. Congratulations David on your appointment as Australian assistant coach. Congratulations Raiders on the way you have played the game of NRL ... no matter the end result you have shown yourselves to be winners.

I used to say the Furnace was rubbish and that we stopped making what was great progress as soon as Neil Henry left. Now that we have charged into contention i have come full circle. The NQ Cows are rubbish so we clearly dodged a bullet with Henry. I would honestly have the Furnace's babies if we can get up on Saturday night!

I find it amusing that we have been picked to finish last in every pre-season pole, by every pundit , everywhere. I am still waiting for the reflections of Gus gould or Phil Rothfield, in their infinite wisdom to declare their pre-season poll totally bogus and to resign. Anyone football fan with more than a few years in the game understood the talent we had at the club, which was truly galvanised this year. In the mean time, I continue to review the telegraph, SMH and the Australian and Fox sports for evidence of humble pie, I continue to hope.... GO green Machine
