Ex-Canberra Raider Matt Gafa showed off his seemingly endless arsenal of offensive weaponry yesterday, edging Belconnen United to within one step of the Canberra Raiders Cup minor premiership.
The Scholars notched their eighth-straight victory, beating the second-placed Queanbeyan Kangaroos 38-32, with Gafa crafting five of his team's seven tries.
When he wasn't sending teammates through the Queanbeyan defensive line, the 31-year-old was wreaking havoc with his long-kicking game, which sparked a brilliant fight back from the home side in the second half.
Down 22-10 at the main break, the Scholars ran in five tries to stun the Kangaroos.
After booting a massive 40-20, Gafa sent fullback Channon McAskill over from the scrum base to kick-start the fight back.
Matt Burnham crossed soon after before Gafa crisply picked out Chris Thorley who touched down to move Belconnen ahead.
The veteran also had a hand in the Scholars' last, launching a towering torpedo bomb which Queanbeyan fullback Adam Misios fumbled leading to a Billy Collins try from the ensuing set.
Fifteen rounds into his first year back in the Canberra Raiders Cup after an English Super League stint with Harlequins, Gafa said he couldn't be happier with his role at the Scholars.
''I like to just have control, kick when I need to kick, pass when I need to pass I'm getting on a bit so I'm losing a bit of speed,'' he said.
Gafa has developed a lethal partnership with back-rower Nathan Reis on the Scholars' left edge, and the combination yielded two tries in the first 15 minutes yesterday. Reis almost had a third minutes later, but Gafa's spiralling ball just missed the No11.
The Kangaroos threatened a stirring comeback late in the game when Pat Matulino and then Mitch Connelly crossed, but the siren snuffed out any Queanbeyan hope.
Belconnen United is now just two competition points away from securing the minor premiership, having won 12 games this year.
