Graham asks Raiders deal or no deal?

Graham asks Raiders deal or no deal?

31 Aug, 2009 10:42 AM
Phil Graham is determined to convince the Raiders he deserves a new contract and ensure tonight's match against the Newcastle Knights will not be his last at Canberra Stadium.

While the veteran winger is reluctant to talk about his future, he admitted his chances of remaining in the lime green beyond this season were slim.

But he has vowed to continue producing the sparkling form that has seen him score five tries in his past three matches in a last-ditch bid to remain in the capital.

Canberra has not offered Graham a contract extension and is unlikely to do so with coach David Furner keen to focus on the club's junior talent.

Rising stars Jarrod Croker, Josh Dugan, Daniel Vidot, Justin Carney and Drury Low are likely to force Graham to pursue a deal at another NRL club or overseas.

''Our young kids coming through are really talented and so it's going to be exciting down here in the next couple of years,'' Graham said.

''I just want to go out there for the last two games and do my bit for the team and make sure I'm doing my job right."

I hope they keep Phil, i met him once in Goulburn and he was a very nice polite guy. While he might not be their best player he's certainly not their worst. Best of luck wherever you are mate.

I seem to recall that a while back we brought in a few older players (Meninga, Jackson, Belcher and the Walters boys) to help educated a pool of young player (Daley, Stuart, Croker, Furner) They turned out alright. If the young blokes have no one to learn from they will either end up average players or other clubs will poach them. The likes of Phil, Tongue and Campo are vital to their eventual success.

Phil still has the speed - still scores tries. Why not keep him? It's one thing to blood juniors but you need to keep the old heads who you know are going to do the job.
