Herbert wins race to join Campese in Raiders' halves

09 Jun, 2009 02:16 PM
Marc Herbert will retain the Canberra Raiders' No7 jersey this weekend, defying a spirited challenge from teammate Josh McCrone.

Coach David Furner will announce his side today for Sunday's clash against the Cronulla Sharks, with his only change set to be Terry Campese's return from Origin.

Furner said McCrone did nothing wrong when he replaced Campese who was absent due to Origin commitments at five-eighth against South Sydney eight nights ago.

But he favoured Herbert's experience at halfback for the Sharks clash at Canberra Stadium.

Herbert cemented his place by leading the Raiders to a convincing 34-18 win over the Rabbitohs in round 12.

The 22-year-old playmaker relished the chance to step up in Campese's absence, scoring a try, setting up a further two and kicking five conversions in his 14th NRL appearance.

''Not to have Campo there on the weekend, I got to run the side and get my confidence up,'' Herbert said.

''When he was announced in Origin I, I was happy for him but it was also an opportunity for myself.

''Now with a couple of Origin games he's going to play I'll get a chance to do that [again].''
