Injuries deplete Raiders' cup team

11 Apr, 2009 12:28 PM
The Canberra Raiders' injury depleted Toyota Cup team faces its biggest challenge of the season today, when it faces off against Cronulla without captain and playmaker Michael Picker.

Picker (knee) and exciting outside back Drury Low (groin) will both miss the round five clash, further depleting a team that has already lost centre Jarrod Croker and fullback Josh Dugan to first grade. The loss of Picker has forced coach Andrew McFadden to move winger Steve Naughton into the halves to play alongside Sam Williams.Daniel Vidot will play fullback in place of Low, while Mitch Kennedy comes into the team in the centres.Stand in captain Travis Waddell said his team was confident of continuing its undefeated start to the season, despite missing a huge chunk of strike power.

''We've got heaps of players that can fill positions and still get the job done,'' Waddell said.

''It is tough with Mick Picker out and not controlling everything for us.

''But [Naughton] has been training well at five-eighth so it shouldn't be too bad.''Waddell made his NRL debut for the Raiders a fortnight ago, before returning to the under-20s team last week.

He helped guide the team to a 38-26 victory over the North Queensland Cowboys, making it four wins in a row for the Raiders.Waddell said making his first-grade debut had boosted his confidence back in the under-20s.

''I just feel like I've got a bit more control around the players.''Waddell hoped to get another go in first grade as soon as possible.''I can't wait to get another shot at it.

''I've just got to keep playing good footy and you never know what will happen.''TODAYToyota Cup round five: Cronulla Sharks v Canberra Raiders at Toyota Stadium, 3.15pm. TV time: Live on Fox Sports1.
