It's Kimmorley or McCrone

29 Jul, 2010 01:00 AM
The Canberra Raiders' search for an experienced halfback will end with Brett Kimmorley, regardless of whether he decides to retire or move to the capital.

Canberra chief executive Don Furner says the club is ready to put its faith in rising playmaker Josh McCrone instead of scouring the NRL for another playmaker.

However, Kimmorley refused to rule out joining the Raiders when contacted by The Canberra Times yesterday.

Raiders coach David Furner has been leading negotiations with Kimmorley and his manager George Mimis.

The veteran has offers from the Bulldogs, Parramatta and Canberra to continue his 15-season career.

And despite rumours he is set to retire, Kimmorley admitted the opportunity to mentor McCrone could see him join Canberra.

''No, not really,'' Kimmorley told The Canberra Times when asked if he was close to deciding on his future.

''I've had some good communications with Dave [Furner], so that's good.

''[Mentoring some young guys in Canberra] is a possibility, obviously Dave has been very good to me.

''But [I haven't] put a time frame on making a decision.''

The Raiders have been on the lookout for an experienced playmaker to help mould McCrone into one of the competition's dominant No7s.

They had hoped Cronulla skipper Trent Barrett would postpone his retirement and join the Raiders for at least a season.

But after Barrett announced last week he would hang up his boots at the end of the season, Canberra's focus has been on Kimmorley.

Melbourne's Cooper Cronk was also on the Raiders' recruitment wish-list, but it is unknown whether the Storm's salary cap issues will force him out of the club.

Stick with McCrone, no die hard raiders fan wants anyone else. Dont waste the money getting an old bloke for a year. McCrone is fantastic when Campo doesnt get in his way

We've made good use of experienced players on short-term contrat before and we must not be insular and disregard experienced players. Kimmorely would be a great buy for a season or two and give McCrone a lot of polish!

Has the club actually spoken with Matt Orford or is that a rumour?

As long as he comes to impart some knowledge to McCrone I think it could prove a masterstroke. I guess time will tell.

We did the same thing with Jason Smith, great for a year or so to bring through and mentor Todd Carney,.. We wasted our time there, lets not do it again... Please learn Raiders.. please...

Hey all. I've been following the Raiders since they first entered the competition (long suffering fan apart from 87 to 94). McCrone is without a doubt the future of Canberras number 7 future and I can see a great player in the making. But he is very green and when 'Campo' gets in his way is more the greeness of McCrone then Campo. It is a small investment to get a very experienced number 7 to mentor and coach McCrone for a year. This investment will pay dividends and watch McCrone start to lead in the years to come instead of playing second fiddle to Campo. Come on, for the first time in years we've actually got player wanting to come to the Raiders. Go the Green Machine!

If the Raiders are looking for a good half back then why not try and get Michael Monaghan. I read sometime back that the two Monaghan's would like to see the end of their career playing with one another. Both players are from Canberra so it would be ideal for the Raiders. Go the Kambah high boys!!!!!!

there is no doubt that BK is a coach in making - a very smart player that can impart knowledge. He would also be an important junior coach in the Raiders team.
