A LITTLE bit of belief and a strong tail wind has helped the Yass Magpies upset reigning premiers Queanbeyan Blues 40-20 at Seiffert Oval yesterday.
After sitting out season 2008, Yass coach Brenden Solomon said his young side was starting to realise it could mix it with the best teams in the Canberra Raiders Cup.
''Last year, Yass didn't have a first-grade team and a lot of these boys haven't played first grade before or played at Seiffert before, so it was a big occasion for them,'' Solomon said.
''To put 40-odd points on the Blues shows we can match it with the big boys [of the competition]. I knew we had it in us, we just had to click. The last two games we took Woden [Rams] to the wire and we gave Gungahlin [Bulls] a push.
''So to come from that to beating the premiers ... we're really happy.''
Yass took advantage of a howling northerly to run in 30 first-half points, leading at the break by 30-6.
Queanbeyan struck back early in the second half, scoring two tries through prop Jay Lasscock and fullback Adam Misios to move the score to 30-16.
But Yass steadied with tries to winger Phil Sparnon and utility Richie Allan, ensuring the upset win.
Pinpoint kicking by Yass hooker Chris Rawlinson and Allan was a highlight of the game and set up the win, according to Solomon.
''In the first half we used the wind well, put it down into the corners and turned them around every set,'' Solomon said. ''After that it forced mistakes and we scored points.''
It was a day of upsets in the Canberra Raiders Cup with the fifth-placed Queanbeyan Kangaroos beating the third-placed Woden Rams 38-28 at Freebody Oval.
The resulting climb in the rankings means three sides Roos, Tuggeranong Bushrangers and Queanbeyan Blues sit equal on 12 competition points.
Yass sits one win shy on 10 competition points.
With eight rounds of the season to run, seven of the competition's nine sides are chances to feature in September's finals series.
Meanwhile, competition leaders West Belconnen Warriors beat the Canberra Scholars 52-8 to remain on top of the table.
Goulburn Workers Bulldogs host the winless Gungahlin Bulls at Workers Arena today.
