It's time to make changes: Furner

20 Jul, 2009 08:01 AM
Canberra Raiders coach David Furner concedes he needs to make changes to his team after the Penrith Panthers ended its charge to the top eight last Saturday night.

Furner will seek a ''please explain'' from referees boss Robert Finch for the controversial decisions that left the Raiders' season hanging by a thread.

The Panthers beat the Raiders 27-14 and while Furner was still seething with the poor decisions yesterday, he admitted his team's performance was not up to standard. Furner refused to declare the Raiders' finals aspirations over despite them virtually needing to win all remaining seven games to figure in the play-offs.

While he found some positives from the sub-par performance, he said the Raiders needed an immediate improvement in form against the Wests Tigers at Canberra Stadium on Sunday.

''We're not talking about ifs, buts or mathematical possibilities [for our season] just yet,'' Furner said.

''Our attention is on the Tigers and we've just got to turn it around and there may be a few changes this week. I want us to be gritty, I want us to be tough for the remainder of the season and I want results.

''If that means I'll have to look at the make-up of the team or changes then I'll do that, I haven't been afraid to do that.

gee 7 games left and you need to make changes now... the writing was on the wall from round 4 this year with the team looking unfit and with a poor attitude. players talking up their origin chances more then playing for the team. start with making changes to your coaching methods or team selections cause i dont hear any signings for next year so id say we are in for a long haul at the bottom

start by changing yourself furner. with 7 games left you remember to make changes to a team that has been performing poorly all year and with a attitude to match. next year isnt looking all that bright either with no dummy half in our team.

The Gameplan also needs a massive overhaul! How do the Raiders go from the best attacking team in the competition in 08 to a team void of any imagination or cohesion. ALL the players need a good hard look at themselves, especially when they are being out-classed, out-enthused and out-played by an 18 year old who has played less than 10 games! Thank god for Dugan!

Some of our expensive players need to start showing value for money. They need to take personal responsibility for results.

Why does the supercoach keep insisting that Tongue is our best selection at hooker, what has Buttriss done wrong. What about selecting Andrew McFadden as coach and putting yourself back to U20s to rediscover you lack of coaching ablilities Furner.

Gentlemen, that was the worst video refereeing I have seen in a long time. All teams get some bad calls from time to time, but the Raiders seemingly are on the end of it more than any other team. (And my mate and I who were watching it together aren't even Raiders supporters). The calls against Canberra were nothing short of disgraceful. As a result the half time score was 18-0 to Penrith and game over....it should have been 6-6 or maybe even 6-0 to Canberra at half time. We were so sickened we couldn't even watch the second half. If those decisions happened to St.George or Parra it would have made front page news, but alas it's only the Raiders so no-one will ever hear of it........

David, you're being a little overly critical, stop bashing yourself up. the team has had to adjust to coaching changes and so have you. On the other hand thought, players like Campese and Monaghan seem to believe that their representative careers are more important than their "bread and butter" games. Maybe they could represent the Raiders in South Logan just for a few games while they reconsider? Josh Dugan, on the other hand, is a champion. I reckon that you have to dort out the player attitude and fitness before you worry about game plans.

A few suggestions to help the raiders, take tongue out of the play making role, put Waddell in as hooker, stop Campo feeding the scrum and instead work as a standoff which would neccessitate both he and Herbert playing a traditional half back role put Vidot inside Monaghan,If your going to stick with big forwards start dropping the smaller ones who drop the ball and drop off tackles. No one least I can doubt Tongues courage loyalty and commitment, but if his injury is preventing him from doing his defensive workload then he shouldnt be picked to play.

I have been supporting the Raiders for over 20 years now. I must admit this year is the only year that I? have felt that there is no point in supporting the Raiders. I will always support the Raiders, but when you see that Management is not doing anything to reverse the situation it is very disappointing. Why in the world would you sign a player for six years? Why haven't there been any signings yet, and why did we go for an untried coach? As members we pay a lot of money, yet the Management of the Canberra Raiders are not doing what they are being paid to do, that is to bring success to the club. WE NEED ANSWERS NOW

Interesting reading, 2 or 3 times this year the raiders have shown what they can do (V storm, 1st half v titans), very pleasing on the eye, similar to last year. So the question is if they have shown that standard on occasion what is happening to have the rest of the games be below par. I would agree that the inclusion of 1 or 2 players would help, but that should not cover the fact that most of the time the team is performing below the standard that they are capable of. Go the green machine
