 Logan's time in green up

Logan's time in green up

19 Aug, 2009 08:10 AM
It appears Scott Logan has played his last game as a Canberra Raider with the club continuing to focus on its future and secure rising stars ahead of veterans.

Logan, who is off contract at the end of the season, fractured his cheekbone in the Raiders' 24-12 victory over the St George Illawarra Dragons last weekend.

Rookie Raiders prop Daniel Joyce signed a new two-year deal at the start of the week and his commitment is likely to force Logan to chase a one-year contract in Sydney or retire.

However, Canberra chief executive Don Furner refused to rule out the possibility of throwing the veteran a lifeline and offering him a one-season deal.

''We haven't offered him [Logan] anything at this stage,'' Furner said.

''We haven't sat down and talked for the last two weeks and it depends on what he wants to do.

''He said last year he wanted to play on for one more season, so he wasn't really in our plans because of that. We've signed Daniel and we need to keep securing those guys coming through.''

Scans on Monday confirmed Logan's NRL season, and possibly career, was over.

I personally believe there are others to go before Logan.. He is still performing and making yards every game.. Phil Graham is another I believe who has another couple of good years in him.. The both bring experience and maturity to a team that needs it too... especially with the young guys we have steppin up... Troy Thompson, Purtell, Turner, Herbert, Flanagan and Kelly.. These are the guys that should be moving on.. They achieve nothing and struggle to put in a good game for SL however are on good money .. These are the guys that need to go to make room to sign the younger guys on better contracts to keep them with us longer.. ie.. Doogs and Croker!

Scott Logan has been a terrific leader and ambassador for the Canberra Raiders in his time here. He carried the team on his massive shoulders in his first season and deservedly took out the player of the year honours, placing him amongst former Raiders greats to have won the award. Congrats and thanks 'Log' - I hope it isn't the last we've seen of you.

I'm with 'worm' on this one, we definately need experience in the team with the fantastic youngsters we've got coming through. The names he mentioned though aren't performing and should be let go, they aren't solid enough in defence and are hesitent in offence. The raiders need to open up room under the salary cap so we can secure these upcomers from getting poached and give our club a future to look forward to.

I agree with all of the above. We need Logan. Look at Steve Price still going at 35+ and Logan shows he has still the goods. How many times has Joyce been give the opportunity to play 1st grade. Nil experience. Lets sign Logan on an incentive based contract, I'm sure he would go for that.

I agree that Logan and Graham should stay but how do you punt the non-performers like Kelly, Herbert, Flanagan etc. I presume they are on contracts so I guess we are stuck with them until they run out. What has happened to Adrian Purtell? Last season he was on fire but this year he appears to have completely lost it - the selectors certainly seem to have lost faith in him. Scott Logan provides the team with maturity and stability up front - I hope they give him another year. I think they should also think about persevering with Phil Graham but I guess there are some young blokes like Drury Low coming through as well as the injured Carney and David Milne who can play on the wing. One thing Graham has in spades is speed which should never be underestimated. The Raiders also need to recruit another half back as cover for Josh McCrone.

Why let Logan go when its shown across the NRL that Props can keep going until 33+? Sure we might be focussing on retaining our younger players, but there has to be a balance, and Logan is a quality prop we can ill afford to lose..

Soccty Logan has done more than enough for the club and if he chooses to play on then we will benefit from it. Scotty signed my jumper a couple of years back and mentioned to me at the time"Dont believe everything you read" as I mentioned to a mate how unfortunate it was to see Scotty leaving at the end of 08'.... So fans hold on for another Logan onslaught next year in the lime green!, (well I really hope so anyway!)
