 Loss complicates Campo's bid

Loss complicates Campo's bid

15 Jun, 2009 01:28 PM
Terry Campese admits another bout of ''second-half syndrome'' could cost him a spot in the NSW team for State of Origin II on Wednesday week.

Campese had three try assists and kicked three goals but came up with a crucial blunder as the Raiders crashed to a 24-22 loss to Cronulla at Canberra Stadium yesterday.

The 24-year-old had a gripping battle with Cronulla five-eighth Trent Barrett, who is also in contention to be selected for NSW tonight.

Afterwards Campese admitted he had no idea if he would retain the NSW No6 jersey, while Sharks coach Ricky Stuart called on selectors to name Barrett, who made the last of his seven Origin appearances in 2005.

After setting up first-half tries to Tom Learoyd-Lahrs and Joel Monaghan to get the Raiders out to a 10-0 lead, Campese knocked on late in the game with Cronulla's Paul Gallen scoring the winning try two sets later.

His performance was a barometer of the entire Raiders team, which twice led by 10 points, only for the Sharks to snatch the win in the 77th minute.

Campese is not only vying with Barrett but also Newcastle's Jarrod Mullen for the coveted NSW No6 jersey.

''I'd love to be there, just hopefully I've done enough,'' Campese said.

''It's second-half syndrome lately, I haven't been playing too well, but hopefully my name gets read out.

''I'll be having a nervous sleep, just thinking about how we let that one slip today.''

IF TERRY GETS DROPPED FROM ORIGIN 2, THOSE SELECTORS ARE FOOLS!

Give the job to someone who can play 2 halves of footy, the Raiders attitude this year is pathetic!, no heart, we should have won by 20 or more... How can a team with so much to lose play with such little heart & determination. The fans deserve better than that.

It'll be hard for Campo, with so many options, the selectors may make him the scapegoat for Game 1. However, all should not be lost. If mighty Tom Learoyd-Lahrs doesn't make the the origin side for game 2, it'll be a disgrace! He dominated again yesterday, after doing the same against Souths

I watched the contest vs the Sharks yesterday afternoon and was utterly disappointed at the lack of commitment and desire shown by the Raiders. In a game that was set to turn their season around, against a foe that could have well and truly be put to the sword, I saw a very mediocre performance. It was also evident that we do not have any game plan, structure or for that matter any apparent respect for the ball and the forementioned. The amount of fundamental errors yesterday, to be honest, very much resembled that of a junior league tussle. Don't get me wrong we did show a few shades of brilliance as usual from Campo, Milne, Croker and the ever improving Learoyd Lahrs - but these guys need a hand Canberra! To David Furner - pick a side and stick with it, please! Throughout this season I have never seen so many unforced changes to a squad. As I see it, it would be very difficult for the team to grow in confidence and develop solid combinations, as their biggest individual worries would be 'Am I going to be playing this weekend?' and 'Who will be playing beside me this weekend?' Show some faith and pick 17 players and stand by them. Make the position theirs and let the others fight to take the jersey off them. Give the team some stability and give them the time to flourish!

The Raiders are lucky that they are not a Sydney team and the scrutiny they are put under for lack of performance. Why is it that the coach and management are not questioned or scrutinised as much as Sydney teams are. As a supporter I feel that this is not good enough and we need answers. Why was is that other coaching options were not pursued when the coaching position was up for grabs? As a supporter I feel that Canberra management are just happy to have a team in the NRL and not really concerned about results

if they drop Campo and start this chopping and changing players, like they always do NSW will be doomed, put Barret on the bench and use him that way.

David Furner is the worst coach in the comp. He only got the job due to the stranglehold the Furner's have the club. sack the board

The Drums are beating......The Coach is not up to it....he inherited a free spirited entertaining football team and turned them into confused rabble...how about sticking with the same team for a bit and stop telling the halfback to catch and pass to campo 90% of the time...NEW COACH NEEDED.....

It's all about self belief for Campo. Last year after Carney was axed he had nothing to lose and that's where we saw him play is best footy. Since then, high expectations have inhibited his style - he now plays a much more predictable structured game. The expectation of rep footy this year (Country and Origin) have constricted his style even further. It's almost as if he gets overawed by the occasion and forgets his role as play maker. In fact, you almost got the impression in Origin I that the few times he was given the ball he didn't want it and offloaded it to someone else. From memory he did the same thing for Country. That's just not good enough at rep level. If he doesn't make it in tonight, at least he'll know why.
