McCrone keen to shore up his spot

McCrone keen to shore up his spot

03 Aug, 2009 01:03 PM
Rookie halfback Josh McCrone insists he won't be taking future NRL selection for granted, despite playing a starring role in the Canberra Raiders' record 56-0 win over the Brisbane Broncos on Saturday night.

But if the praise his captain and other senior teammates heaped on him following an impressive first-grade return is anything to go by, the 22-year-old can look forward to an extended opportunity to prove himself.

McCrone had an immediate impact in his first game back in the Raiders' line-up since round 12, helping set up Canberra's first two tries and forcing several repeat sets with his smart short kicking.

His composed performance clearly eased the pressure on star five-eighth Terry Campese, who responded by playing his best game of the season.

McCrone was only handed his fourth NRL start because regular halfback Marc Herbert broke his hand against Wests Tigers last week.

But considering the Raiders had been kept to just four points in two of their previous three appearances with Herbert in the No7 jersey, McCrone has a strong case to retain the halfback position for the remainder of the season.

Raiders captain Alan Tongue said McCrone's enthusiastic start against the Broncos had helped spark Canberra's attack.

''He definitely helped,'' Tongue said.

yes ethusiasm was the key on saturday night. great win and mcrone deserves praise for coming in to play halfback in a team that was struggling to score points and he definately had a hand in turning that around. his short kicking game is exactly what we need in our attack.

Well done Josh. It was a great performance. The 56 points was awesome, but seeing the desperation in goal line defence was just as good. More of the same next week please!

Sign that kid up for life!, How good to see a half with a bit of a footy brain and didn't put all the work onto Campo. Pity it took us 20 rounds to produce something like that but we will take it. Great turn around boys.. that will keep the crowds flowing!... To all those who have "Handed their memberships in".. shame shame!

It's no coincidence that the Raiders backs, and particularly Terry Campese, produced free flowing rugby league with the introduction of a thinking halfback and the return of Scott Logan who on Saturday night gave the Green Machine real go-forward with one of the best displays from any NRL prop this season. Let's hope Logan has no intention of retiring just yet and that we Raiders supporters can watch him go around again in what is shaping up as promising 2010 season.

For one moment I had to check if the book jekyll and Hyde wasnt written by the canbrra raiders. I agree with everyone that Mcrone looks to have a good footy brain. Brisbane were pretty bad but the raiders were good to watch. Go the green machine

One Raiders win against a busted Broncos side proves nothing. What we need is consistenancy. Lets see how we go against the Bulldogs, Dragons just to name a few in the next couple of weeks. But hopefully it is the platform to build on for the future weeks and next year.

Broncos are a side that have had their last six losses at around and average of 45 points a game and were in obvious disarray on saturday night - Yass magpies would have flogged them - so don't make too much of the win but do take the two points! They make up for some of the points we should have had from previous games but failed to capture them!

Unacceptable Raiders. Had you been in contention for a place in the top 8 you would have had me, and another 10, 000 there to watch. Bruce has to become the "house of pain" for visiting teams not cold one week and hot the next.

I was impressed with McCrone when we played Souths and was really pleased to see him get another chance. He has great determination, speed and skill. The other young guns were impressive as well. What about Dugan's goal line defence, holding up two players to prevent tries? Pretty gutsy. Also agree that Logan and TIlse had a big impact right from the start. Saturday night (along with the wins against the Storm and Titans) showed what the Raiders are capable of - now we just need to bottle that and bring it out week by week.

Geez Long Memory - How about supporting your team through thick and thin? Or are you one of these 'if they're not winners I don't want to know them' types?
