NSW axes Campese for Origin II

16 Jun, 2009 11:29 AM
Canberra Raider Terry Campese was axed from the NSW side for State of Origin II in favour of veteran Sharks five-eighth Trent Barrett yesterday.

NSW coach Craig Bellamy said the Blues needed a change around the scrumbase after a disappointing showing by halves Campese and Peter Wallace in the 28-18 Origin I loss in Melbourne.

While Campese was dropped, Raiders teammates Joel Monaghan and Tom Learoyd-Lahrs were selected as standbys for the injury-riddled Blues.

Campese was too disappointed to talk last night, but bolter Learoyd-Lahrs was ecstatic.

''Until an hour ago I thought it was just hype, I didn't think there was any weight behind [the rumours I was in with a chance],'' Learoyd-Lahrs told The Canberra Times.

''I thought Campo and Monas were the real threats, and maybe [Alan] Tonguey if his injury hadn't come.

''I was putting away a feed, watching a bit of telly and [got the call].

''When [I first heard] I said 'What are you kidding?' Then I turned [the television] over and watched it just to make sure it wasn't gee up and they said it, so I thought I better go and get my stuff ready.''

With an injury cloud hanging over several Blues, Bellamy's 17-man side is almost certain to change.

Skipper Kurt Gidley (calf muscle), lock Paul Gallen (shoulder), utility Craig Wing (hamstring), and centres Jamie Lyon (ankle) and Michael Jennings (calf) are all in doubt.

FANCY DROPPING TERRY, THOSE SELECTORS ARE IDIOTS. I WON'T BE WATCHING THE GAME.

it just goes to show that campo was made the scapegoat for origin I. where was the blame for kurt gidley standing out and knocking on and wallace not doing much at all...if anyone should've gone it should've been wallace and they should've brought in Mullen..but thats NSW for you NO LOYALTY for there players.

Is this really a suprise? i thought Campese was lucky to get in there for the first game. he needs a lot more experiance(and a better team) before he will get the call up again!

I invite anyone who actually saw Origin 1 to have another look at the video and check out how Campese actually played. In a well beaten side, he was solid in defence and on the limited times he got the ball, provided good service to the backs. Unfortunately, Farah, Wallace and Gidley only wanted to play in the middle, where the Maroons defence was rock solid. The Sydney media campaign against Campese over the last week has been unfounded, subjective, biased and.....eventually successful. So much for looking to the future. I am a normal footy fan, and always put team loyalty over any other game. I went for the Blues in game one, now I will be hoping for another Maroon flogging of an insipid NSW team.

Terry You will come back better for this, it sucks but you are a great player and show them why you shouldn't of been looked over. Go the raiders

Serena (8.09am), are you Campese's partner or mother? He's not up to the job girl, get real!

I must say I wasn't really surprised that Campese got dropped after the result of the game on Sunday - it was really Barrett vs Campese for the NSW 5/8 spot and Cronulla won. If the Raiders had hung in and won it might have been a different story. Very disappointing. Unfortunately the NSW selectors don't have a long-term vision as the Qld selectors do - they chop and change and never have a settled side. They should have persevered and developed a halves combination for the future instead of panicking and going for the safety option of Barrett. Campese has the potential to be an explosive match winner at Origin level but hasn't been given the opportunity. I don't think Bellamy's style of play suits him anyway. Lets hope he can turn it around for the Raiders.

Terry was not actually AXED as shouted in the headlines (obviuosly by a sports writer trying to get some sensationalism), the selectors simply did not choose him for the next game. I am disapointed he did not make it in the team as I feel he would be a worthy inclusion. As Terry would say - there is always next time. I agree with above however the Blues Origin 1 team is too young too switch palyers match to match - they need to form relationships on the field.

I thought Campo was extremely unlucky! Also, hopefully Watmough gets hit by a bus so big TLL gets a run - I love the guy, he is such a big human!
