Footballers across the ACT will turn pink this weekend to help in the fight against breast cancer.
The Woden Rams will don pink socks as they take on the undefeated West Belconnen Warriors in round four action of the Canberra Raiders Cup at Phillip Oval this afternoon.
AFL Canberra will hold Pink Footy Day, with all matches today, including girls and junior matches, replacing the red Sherrin with a bright pink football.
The pink Sherrins will be auctioned off after the game with all proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Network of Australia.
Other fundraising activities include the sale of scones courtesy of Bakers Delight, while the Sportsman's Warehouse will give away shopping vouchers to the best dressed pink footy person and best dressed pink footy club.
AFL Canberra general manager Rowan Johnstone is thrilled by the response from clubs and the league's official partners and suppliers.
''Pink Footy Day is a recognition to women who contribute so much to our local footy and a show of support for those women and families in our community who are on their cancer journey,'' Johnstone said.
While unaware of the AFL pink day until recently, the Woden Rams ladies day will feature raffles and a catered marquee to say thank you to the special women in the players' lives, with all proceeds going towards breast cancer research.
Rams coach Brenton Lawrence said it was ''all about the ladies''.
''The idea is all the girls can get together and get to know each other and we can give a little something back,'' Lawrence said. ''Behind the scenes they cook dinners, wash clothes and look after us and this way we can support the breast cancer foundation at the same time.
''We're looking at getting a few numbers out and we're hoping to make it an annual event. Anyone is welcome, it's all for a good cause and everyone is welcome.''
Despite the fundraiser, Lawrence said the Rams were still focused on the game.
''We always go out there to win,'' he said. ''We're not cocky but at the same time we're building confidence and looking forward to getting out there and playing some footy.''
The Rams face a Warriors outfit fresh off a two-week break.
While happy to take part in the fundraiser, Peters said he was more interested in beating the Rams than what colour socks the opposition was wearing.
''It is a bit hard having two weeks off but we can only play with what we're dealt,'' Peters said.
''[But] the boys have trained really well this week and I don't see why we can't continue our winning start to this season.''
''We aren't playing that well with the ball but our defending has been really, really good.''
