 Raiders' attack goes missing

Raiders' attack goes missing

23 Mar, 2009 06:41 AM
They've gone from the NRL's great entertainers to an attacking mess in just two weeks.

The Canberra Raiders came within a minute of posting one of the club's most unwanted records yesterday, as they slumped to a 28-4 loss to the Sydney Roosters.

Had Bronson Harrison not scored in the final minute of the game, it would have been the first time the Raiders had failed to score at Canberra Stadium in the club's history.

The try also broke a 120-minute scoring drought stretching back to last week's loss to Wests Tigers.

After racing to 26 points in the opening 40 minutes of their season last week, the Raiders have since scored just one try in three halves of football.

It is a statistic they desperately need to reverse before Saturday's clash with the Eels at Parramatta Stadium.

Their point-scoring drought is in stark contrast to 2008, when they averaged more than 30 points during their last 17 games of the season.

why is it that every time the opposition move the ball out wide, our wingers feel it their duty to come flying in on the centre who is already capably marked on the inside? its happened almost every time in the last two games and every time they have done it, they ball gets spread to the the unmarked winger, usually for a try. Minichello had time enough to literally walk 8 metres for the try yesterday. if Dave Furner has any sense he will drop this umbrella type defense as its only been two weeks in and the opposition have already seen it as our defensive defiency and have attacked it repeatedly. if they just employ the slide defence and stay on their man then the opposition backs will be herded toward the sideline and the threat will be nullified every time. rugby league really isnt a hard game but at the moment the raiders are making it look that way.

what's going on guys? On paper we're a much better team than this.

it is great that the raiders look for youth and support the great toyota team from last year but sadly in two games we have seen a lack of experience when it comes to scoring and defence.....Yes we are missing our big men..Yes it was warm conditons and the game is faster but when you play like we do....(if you score we can score two..thinking) and we dont deliver with the scoring then what happens happens. I think Herby is not looking the same player after his injury and he is showing weekness...I believe the club should be more serious about having a look at Mike Monaghan, if the repoets are true that he wonts to rejoin the raiders. I think he will be able to take pressure of a talent like campo who is finding it tuffer this year. And also help captn tongue with leading this young team around.

Too flat and one out in attack, we could not have had a runner who came from further back than 3 metres from the ruck. We applied no pressure to their halves at the back end of sets and ours were always under presure.

Furner was always going to be a massive gamble!!!! Can anyone tell me what his game plan was yesterday...no structure in any facet.....could be a long year.....we didnt look fit either

Herbert has to go!, I watched him dordle around the backline all day yesterday, while Campo was trying to do it all. He got smashed a couple of times early and went missing... Sorry Herbie but your playing with the big boys now.. time to harden up and get involved or give someone else a go....

Furner really needs to look at his team and use the talent on offer, thus far this has not happened. I only hope they get there act together before the season goes downhill. Harrison is trying his best and the new recruits are playing the best in the team.. where was Stuart Flanagan yesterday when we needed him, Furner needs to open his eyes and give this boy game to better improve our attacking plays...

I decided to support the Raiders by physically attending the game (I have been a long term fan since '84 but interested has waned (no pun intende) over the past few years, although I have continued to watch them on the box. Come on Raiders management get real with the selction process and recruitment. A couple of good buys, particulalry in Harrison, but Shillo went missing against his old club. We had no go forward. tho Miller tried his best even after the heavy knock. Look Marc Herbert is not up to it and its not only yesterdays game. Every club producing the goods has a a top half back that sets the backline going and drives the pack, Herbert can't do that and how many wrong options did he take?? I garee if Michael Mono's is looking to come back get him now before someone else does. He is a proven half back and can play in the dummy half role AND he can also kick taking pressure off Campo. I have always admired Alan Tongue but he has lost a bit of go forward this year. Carney is not up to scratch on the wing and Adrian Purtell..say no more. I saw a young guy in 20's No 4 who has what it takes to make it and alongside big Joel he would develop quickly. Why did they ever let Colin Best go, he was our best last year and is showing the same form with the Bunnies. The CT talked about corporate support and fans getting behind their team BUT if yesterday's performance is any indication then its going to be a long cold winter at Bruce/Canberra Stadium with a handful of diehard supporters. I will give them another week or so but if FURNER doesn't make changes then I will not be travelling to the games.

It's only round two and a bit too early to be writing them off. However, this was the problem last year with the Raiders flying home at end of season without that base of early wins under the belt. I was there yesterday and they looked uncoordinated. No point having a guy as big as Shillington if he stands that flat. He should take a leaf out of O'Meley's book. I think it's great that they have a team of guys mainly from Canberra and country NSW, with a Canberra coach as well. I'm confident we will see better than that. Stick with them.

The boys did look unorganised in both attack and defence yesterday. Young Carney had (I think) his worst run ever. It took him 'till after half time to catch a pass and then when he held one he wasn't able to make his usual promotion. Don't worry Canberra, they'll come good. It was just an off day!
