Raiders get serious about their top-eight hopes

21 Aug, 2010 01:00 AM
Veteran centre Adam Mogg has declared the Canberra Raiders are ready to ''do something special'' and their bid to make the finals is about to heat up.

And the team isn't happy just making up the numbers in the top eight.

It wants to launch a serious charge to the top of the NRL.

The club has won five consecutive matches just four times in its history.

Three of those winning streaks led to premierships in 1989, 1990 and 1994.

Repeating those feats again is the mountainous task the Raiders face this year.

After beating the Panthers and Bulldogs in the past two weeks, the Raiders need to topple the St George Illawarra Dragons tomorrow before setting their sights on the Cowboys and Broncos to finish the season.

One slip would torpedo them out of finals contention.

But after winning five of their past six matches, Mogg said the Raiders were poised to continue their impressive form.

That starts with a blockbuster clash against the top-of-the-table Dragons at Canberra Stadium.

''We've got our chance to do something special for this year and I'm really looking forward to it,'' Mogg said.

''It's not [about winning] five in-a-row now, is it?

''It's only three.

''The two [games] after this weekend aren't going to matter if we can't [beat the Dragons].

''We've just got to make sure we concentrate on getting the little things right in each game.''

Mogg has helped the Raiders to the finals in three of his previous four seasons in Canberra.

He has been a significant driving force in Canberra's late-season revival.

An injury to star centre Joel Thompson allowed Mogg to move back to his preferred position in the centres.

What first appeared a devastating blow to the team's finals hopes has transformed into a crucial move.

Thompson had been the Raiders' most destructive back and led the team's try-scoring tally.

But Mogg who is still deciding whether he will play on next season has helped propel winger Daniel Vidot on a try-scoring spree.

After returning to the capital from France as a utility player, he was rotated as Canberra's halfback, hooker, centre and a ''Mr Fix It'' on the bench.

Since partnering with Vidot, the winger has crossed for seven tries in six weeks to take his tally to 13 for the year.

''I've always sort of been a guy that likes to play for his winger and Dan has been playing really well all year,'' Mogg said.

''I've got big raps on him and he's only going to get better and better.

''I probably played six different positions [when I first came back] ... it's just about getting more comfortable with the team, I didn't want to come in and just play my style, that's not me or what you should do.

''It's taken a few different positions and a bit of time and I wanted to fit into the team structure.''
