Raiders may earn Origin III call up

01 Jul, 2009 08:19 AM
Injuries to a number of key Queensland and NSW players have opened the door for several Raiders to play in Origin III in Brisbane on July 15.

Raiders forwards David Shillington and Tom Learoyd-Lahrs are both tipped to be included when the teams for the Origin dead-rubber are announced next week.

Injuries to front-row duo Petero Civoniceva (toe) and Ben Hannant (knee) mean the Maroons are facing a selection dilemma for the first time this series.

Shillington, along with Matt Scott, Queensland's 18th man for the first Origin game, his Cowboys teammate Carl Webb, and out-of-favour Bronco Dave Taylor will come under consideration.

Maroons coach Mal Meninga was in Canberra for the unveiling of his statue at Canberra Stadium on Sunday and watched the Raiders trounce the Melbourne Storm.

Before the game, he hinted Shillington was achance in his third Origin team.

''He'll come into calculations for sure, him and Matty Scott from up North Queensland way,'' he said.

''I'll have a keen eye on young David and hopefully he plays well.''

Blues selectors will be searching for yet another new face after NSW Origin prop Michael Weyman was ruled out for six weeks with an ankle injury

Tom Learoyd-Lahrs, NSW's 18th man for Origin II, will look to press his claims for a Blues jersey with a big game against the Gold Coast Titans at Canberra Stadium this Sunday.

Learoyd-Lahrs, who usually plays second row, backed himself to make the switch to prop if necessary.

''I'd play on the wing if they gave me the opportunity,'' Learoyd-Lahrs joked.

''If I was to play [in Origin] I think front row would suit me more than on the edges because if you're in the front row you can get the ball in your hands and get involved early.

''I think Shillo's more than ready for his opportunity for Queensland, he's been a consistent performer for three or four years.

''We're teammates and good mates off the field but if we're on different teams you've got jobs to do and he'll be out there to stop me doing my job.''

I am still trying work out how big TLL was not named as captain for NSW in Origin 1. Can anyone shed any light on the conspiracies that continue to dog the Raiders?

Dougie, Dougie, Dougie... The answer is obvious mate! At that point the NSW Hierarchy thought he was a Queenslander! They already had a captain... The real question is how you got named Longstaff...

I think the name "Longstaff" speaks for itself, the REAL question is how a bloke comes to be known as simply "Pork"....?

Pork - you're a funny bastard! Dougie - I think he definitely deserves to have a crack at the run on side. But he'll need to prove himself at origin level before there can be any talk of him captaining the side...

TLL is so tough it's natural NSW selectors would have thought he was a Queenslander. Go you mighty Maroons!!!!!!!
