The Canberra Raiders have named one of the biggest packs in the NRL for Friday night's clash with the Gold Coast Titans.
Coach David Furner named a forward pack boasting more than a tonne of flesh to fly to the Gold Coast tomorrow for the match at Skilled Park. The 11 forwards named weigh an average 101.5kg, including 112kg prop Dane Tilse, after the 200cm giant made a successful return from injury with the club's Queensland feeder club Souths Logan last weekend.
Only five clubs boast heavier packs, with the NRL's reigning premier Manly the league's heaviest pack, averaging 102.6kg.
For the first time this year Furner was able to name an unchanged side two weeks in a row, with Tilse added as 18th man to the side that beat the Cronulla Sharks 24-14 last Saturday.
Leading the charge in the forwards for the Raiders has been David Shillington, the former Rooster having started every match this season.
''We struggled to get our first win so now that we have finally got it and have a bit of momentum behind us it would be nice to get the hat-trick of wins on Friday,'' Shillington said.
''The Titans are really strong at home, and they are doing really well away after beating Melbourne and the Cowboys so it's pretty good.
''It's going to be a really good test for us away from home.''
Shillington expected his forward partners to prove a handful for the talented Titans outfit that has lost just one match this season.
''That's going to be our strength, hopefully we can use the forward pack to our advantage.
''They have a really good attacking back row of [Anthony] Laffranchi, [Ashley] Harrison and [Mark] Minichiello and up front with Luke Bailey I'd be surprised if he didn't play for NSW this year so we have a few people to watch this year.''
Furner said he was yet to make a decision on whether to name three big men on the bench.
Along with Tilse, Tom Learoyd-Lahrs, Troy Thompson, Josh Miller and Shaun Fensom are named on the five-man bench.
He said the Gold Coast had targeted Canberra's big men in the past, and was conscious of the attacking prospect the Titans possessed.
''I'm just having a look at the side still and haven't finalised the decision with what combination we go for, but it is one of the thoughts to go for three big guys on the bench,'' Furner said.
