Raiders slice, dice in salary sacrifice

04 Sep, 2009 07:48 AM
The Canberra Raiders will have about $250,000 less to spend in their 2010 salary cap than originally budgeted for, thanks to the emergence of rookies Jarrod Croker and Josh Dugan as well as a bevy of bonuses.

Raiders chief executive Don Furner revealed yesterday why the club will probably farewell Phil Graham, Scott Logan and Adrian Purtell at the end of the season, while not bringing in a single big-name recruit.

He said the unexpected amount of NRL games Dugan and Croker played this season, coupled with six debut bonuses and five representative bonuses, had combined to cost the club around $250,000 out of its $4.1million salary cap allowance for 2010.

Furner equated that to the cost of two experienced players.

''The salary cap is the hardest thing in the game to administer,'' Furner said.

An easier way to save that money would be to release Purtell (who was signed on good money when the Storm were apparently chasing him) and Stuart Flanagan as I believe he is also on a decent wicket that way we should easily have enough to re-sign Graham, Logan and possibly even Plum for next season. Then at the end of next season dont offer Turner another contract to save even more money. If the team really is that close to the cap I would like to know which players are taking so much of it up and which administrators are responsible?

Money spent to blood and then secure Dugan and Croker is money well spent IMO. Both have the ability to swing momentum in a game and both, without a doubt, will be rep players in future. The emergence of these two (as well as Joel Thompson and Travis Waddell) has been one of the best aspects of the 2009 season. Roll on 2010 and go the Green Machine!

The tough thing for us is that we have to pay overs compared to other clubs in the NRL, just to get players to relocate to Canberra. This is due to the perception that Canberra is cold and boring (even though we know its a great city!). Everyone knows this, so the question is why doesn't the NRL give us extra cap space to compensate, like they do for the Storm?

Its happens every year with the Raiders, the management need to make better contingency plans and research the players we sign. Flanagan was a reserve at best for the Tigers so why would he shine here when we had Withers who was perfect and would have done it for the right $, now were showing signs we wont be able to keep these young guns, again management will blame "external influences" and we will be watching more of our juniors be succesful elsewhere......

I'm not sure why this article makes no mention of Brett Kelly. Surely he is the Raiders no. 1 target? He is not one your big names but I am convinced that he has the potential to become a great player. All he needs to do is learn how to catch, pass and tackle. I feel sorry for Adrian "the Turtle" Purtell. He would be a good footballer but he is so slow he would struggle to win the girls under 9s 100 metres at a little athletics carnival. Life is cruel sometimes.

I find this decision outrageous. Purtell is the life blood of the Green Machine and reminds me of a better version of Chicka Ferguson (with a dash of Noa Nadruku). I will be handing back the signed Raiders jersey that I am currently wearing at work in protest. It will be hard as I am currently the envy of the office.

yep there is plenty of dead wood to clear out, starting with purtell and flanagan. i'd be happy to see carney leave too, or at least shift to the forwards, he's just too short to play out wide. the side we've had out there the past few weeks is strong and with some consistency will challenge for a top 4 finish next season. hopefully we can slot milne into the no5 jersey graham will vacate.

Re - signing these young guys should be the priority of the Raiders and it is good to see that this is the direction we are going.. Loges I think would have been a good retention as we need a solid prop, however look at the backs we have... do you really find room for Purts or Graham in a backline containing Duges, Croker, Vidot, Monna's, Carney, milne, Stuart and Low?? Sad to see Naughto is moving on but can't keep em all!
