Saints in far from heavenly triumph

30 Mar, 2009 01:00 AM
St George Illawarra coach Wayne Bennett isn't expecting his side's attack to click into gear any time soon and he says the Dragons will need to keep gutsing out NRL wins.

Yesterday's slugfest between the Dragons and Cronulla produced just 16 points from two teams that average just 14 and 12 respectively.

The Dragons scraped home 10-6 but have the second-worst points-for record in the NRL with 42, while Cronulla has the equal worst with 36.

''I'd love to create more [opportunities], it's just not going to happen for us for a little while yet,'' Bennett said.

''We'll just keep gutsing it out until it starts to come ... the first try was a little bit of what I hope is coming, some nice touches, a nice bit of flair, a little bit of creativity.

''It's just they're all getting used to different things and different responsibilities.''

One positive in the Dragons' attack was the injection of halfback Mathew Head from the bench, which meant Ben Hornby went to fullback and the livewire Darius Boyd to the wing.

''I think it worked pretty good in the last 30 minutes, I thought he made a little bit of a difference there,'' Bennett said of the injury-plagued Head.

''I'm not sure it was the right moves but I know I had to get Mathew Head on the ground so whether taking Darius out of fullback was a smart move [I don't know].''

Bennett also backed five-eighth Jamie Soward, who was shown up in defence by Melbourne running Greg Inglis at him in round one.

''That's just a fact of life, that's what they're going to do but we haven't conceded any tries down there in the last two weeks, someone might get a message soon,'' Bennett said.

Sharks coach Ricky Stuart pleaded for patience with his depleted side, which was missing three backs before star half Trent Barrett went down with a worrying neck injury.

''There's a lot of stuff happening to us at the moment that we've got no control over ... what is eventuating at the moment is very tough for the players but it's character building,'' he said.

''We're putting a brand new team together here in regards to the boys who are coming into vital positions. So we're not cutting our wrist that's a beautiful coach's cliche isn't it?''

A 60th-minute Ben Creagh try sealed the victory after the scores had been locked at 6-6 from the 53rd minute.

St George Illawarra scored the only first-half try, to Hornby in the 12th minute, while the Sharks seemed briefly galvanised by Barrett's injury, scoring three minutes later when winger David Simmons grabbed a Blake Green cross-field kick. AAP
