Storm wreckage yields White as main prize for Raiders

30 Jul, 2010 12:00 AM
The Canberra Raiders are set to salvage a key piece from the wreckage of the salary cap-cheating Melbourne Storm, luring prop Brett White to the capital next season.

The Canberra Times understands White's recruitment on a three-year contract is now a virtual done deal.

The move only awaits clearance from the NRL, whose salary cap audit team will be required to approve it.

Cooma product White's return to his home region will signal the end of the career of Canberra stalwart Troy Thompson, who will pursue a career at another club or retire.

The recruitment of Kangaroos prop White will excite many within the Raiders' player and supporter fraternity, bolstering an imposing forward pack that already features Origin props David Shillington and Tom Learoyd-Lahrs.

However, some have argued the club doesn't need the extra forward power and should have spent its energy and resources luring an experienced halfback. Plenty of energy has gone into that search already with no result.

White is still contracted to the Storm for two seasons. To be released from the remainder of that contract, the NRL would need to allow any shortfall between what the Storm had planned to pay him and what the Raiders will pay to be counted in this year's blown cap.

News of White's signing comes three days before the Raiders are due to meet the Storm in Melbourne.

The Raiders face an already colossal task to beat the Storm at its home ground, where they've only won once. That challenge could be made tougher if star fullback Josh Dugan is forced out with a shoulder injury.

Dugan failed to train with his teammates yesterday and instead had scans on his corked shoulder blade.

Should he be ruled out of the round 21 match, it would be a cruel blow to Canberra's hopes of ending its losing streak in Victoria.

Dugan is expected to travel with the team, but coach David Furner has already started devising back-up plans if his boom fullback is unable to play. Daniel Vidot and David Milne both trained as cover for Dugan.

If Vidot moves to fullback, Drury Low may be called into the top grade.

However, Furner is keen to keep Vidot who has bagged four tries in the past-two games on the wing and Milne is still battling an abductor strain.

They should keep Troy Thompson in a mentoring\coaching role for the under 20s. He would keep a good positive culture around the club.

Isn't the NRL bringing in a veteran rule to keep blokes like Troy at the same club after years of loyalty? What happens when injuries hit next year? A sad day for the NRL if long serving 'employees' of the great game are left with his ultimatum.

Thompson and then Tongue should be kept involved with the club in mentoring rural scouting roles. Both are good influences. Shouldn't allow a repeat of the end of glory days where most of the players scattered to the four winds. Milne was a bit lost the last time he was thrown into 1st grade and took a while to cope with the speed of the game. However, he needs a chance to prove he should be re-signed.

Good move for the future... players like Tommo and Logan will be remembered as good, honest, players by Raiders fan, but it's clear they are reaching the end of their careers. White is good coverage when they leave.

Troy has given years of loyalty to the Raiders and should be rewarded with a position within the club if he wants to. I totally agree with Truth be Told. Come on guys reward long standing players. NRL needs to realise that their supports want retention of older players to add steady influences to the up and coming players. Booting them to kingdom come as soon as they show signs of wear is NOT the way to go. Is this to be Tongue's reward also.Hope not. Thank you Troy for the time you have given us supporters in playing for Canberra

Yeah White's a good player but maybe the money could have been spent on a decent halfback .

We r gonna have the meanest pack next year, our young talented backs have another year experiance in first grade under the belt. Persevere with Mcrone & Toungey's not done yet....
