While most of the Canberra Raiders let out a collective sigh of relief when their speed-test technology failed yesterday, Josh Miller was filthy.
Not because the hulking prop thought he had found an extra yard of pace over the off-season break - he just loves training.
So much, in fact, that while he was on ''holidays'' he trained by himself up to four times a week just to make sure he was in peak condition for day one of the Raiders' pre-season.
While his teammates cringed at the thought of another fitness test, Miller said pushing his body to the limit was ''relaxing''.
The bulk of David Furner's 2010 squad began its fitness tests yesterday.
And the players caught a lucky break when the devices used to test their speed unexpectedly malfunctioned.
Instead they had to run continuously for 10 minutes to test their endurance.
That will be followed by lower-body strength workouts today.
Miller, the joint winner of last season's Mal Meninga Medal, finished second in the 10-minute session after running 2.5km.
''I felt good out there, it was good to get out and have a run around with the boys,'' Miller said.
''I was about 10m behind Josh McCrone, but he should be beating me he's a little halfback.
''I always do a bit of training just because I wouldn't feel right not doing it.''
Furner will cast a close eye over his players during pre-season training, with those failing skin-fold tests forced to do extra work over weekends.
His players will have nowhere to hide with global positioning system devices keeping track of their every move.
''I ran into a few of the players [in the off season] and they were looking pretty fit,'' Furner said.
''Looking on the results from last pre-season all the players are above what they were so they've obviously done some training.''
