Tongue is in the running to give Melbourne a lashing

29 Jul, 2010 01:00 AM
Alan Tongue is five weeks ahead of his comeback schedule, training like he's ready to play and could be with his teammates on the plane to Melbourne on Saturday.

Don't be surprised if the injured Canberra Raiders skipper makes an unexpected appearance at AAMI Park on Sunday.

With a medical clearance and a desire to get back into the NRL, Tongue is on track to return to action after 13 weeks on the sideline.

And that could come sooner rather than later with the 29-year-old an outside chance of making a shock comeback against the Melbourne Storm.

But the veteran insisted he's not preparing to pull on the lime green jumper just yet.

After groin surgery in May left him just four games short of notching his 200th NRL game, Tongue is desperate to get on the field.

And he's trying to convince the Raiders to put him on a flight to Victoria, even if that means he's just there to support the team.

''I'm not too far away [from playing], it looks like I'm only a week or two away,'' Tongue said.

''I hope [I'm going down].

''But unless something goes dire straits with the team during the week, I don't think I'll be in this week.

''I'd like to think I was a chance [of playing], but I've sat out a fair chunk of footy already and to come back a bit too early would not be the right thing. I need to get right into training and into contact before I get that confidence and I'm right to go.''

Tongue has been Canberra's lucky charm over the past three weeks.

After playing just the first seven games of the season, Tongue joined David Furner in the coaches box for the Raiders' win over the Manly Sea Eagles earlier this month. The team hasn't been beaten since.

I agree with GarryofPerth, Tongue's past it....He was great in 2006 but he's been in steady decline since then and I think he's a bench player at best now. I don't think he's good enough to displace Waddell from hooker or Fensom/Miller from lock...at least not on form/merit.

According to the nrl stats AT is averaging 31 tackles a game. Who do you bench to give AT some game time.? You dont just replace someone so AT can play, what impact will he provide?. A swifter pass? A longer kick? A devastating run, lets give Dugan a break so AT can play. Tragicly age does weary them, father time is catching up,do you want to keep the young talent at the club or watch them go by holding on to the old guys. Me selfish? in your dreams

yeah, he's been great for the club...but where do you put him in the 13. can't be lock or hooker.

Go Tonguey. Don't worry about the ill informed. No idea. You guys are talking about the most committed and loyal Raiders player of all time (big boast but I believe it). Go Tonguey! Go Raiders! If I wasn't in the USA, I'd be making the trip to Melbourne to get amongst the feral Storm supporters!

Well said Straightshooter. He should be put straight back into lock where he can play 80 mins. The negative comments reek of a typical NSW supporter. No recognition of how gutsy he plays or inspirational he is to the team.

No doubting Tongue's heart or commitment, however his workload has been steadily declining over the past few seasons and I don't think he justifies a starting place anymore. I'd still have him on the bench, very useful and reliable utility, but Fensom is the future so I couldn't justify benching him for Tongue.

Toungie has been carrying the team for the last few years while injuried, this is now why he has an extended break, to recover properly. Having toungie back will cut out the "laziness" around the ruck and keep the guys heads together when things aren't 100%, I agree he is not at his best at the moment but He is an inspiration to the rest of the team and club!
