White eyes Raiders as Cooma league roots prove attractive

28 Jul, 2010 01:00 AM
The opportunity to give back to his junior rugby league roots could lure Brett White to the Canberra Raiders next season.

But until the Melbourne prop gets a ''tap on the shoulder'' from Storm officials, White is committed to helping rebuild the Victorian club.

White, who grew up in Cooma, confirmed yesterday Canberra was one of his preferred options should the Storm cut him free, despite having two years left on his contract.

The Storm is still trying to figure out how to keep its high-profile stars after it was revealed it had cheated the NRL's salary cap by $3.17million over the past five seasons.

It is projected to be a further $1.3million over the cap next year.

To meet NRL regulations and compete for the premiership in 2011, the Storm needs to cull its roster.

''I've got two years left [in Melbourne] and as it stands I'm committed to those two years,'' White told The Canberra Times.

''But if I wasn't to be at Melbourne next year then one of my preferred options is to be at Canberra.

''If it comes to fruition [that I go to Canberra] it would be a wonderful thing.

''I've always had a desire to put back into my local area and it's been hard to do that from being in Melbourne.

''That's one of the attractions I have for Canberra and me [playing there].''

The Storm play the Raiders at AAMI Park on Sunday.

But White said he had put no timeline on deciding where he will play next year.

Instead, the 28-year-old has put his future in the hands of Storm officials.

And with superstar Greg Inglis likely to join either the Brisbane Broncos or Gold Coast Titans and Brett Finch, Jeff Lima and Ryan Hoffman going to Europe, White may not be forced out.

''It's up to the Storm and I'm letting them guide me in what's best for this team,'' he said.

''Whoever it be that needs to go or stay, the culture we've had down here is team first.

''[Canberra] has a wonderful up-and-coming team and a wonderful culture there.

''There's certainly an attraction [to the Raiders], but at the moment I'm still contracted down here.''

While White waits to be told his future, veteran Canberra prop Troy Thompson is in a similar situation.

Thompson is recovering from a shoulder injury and was not named in David Furner's squad for the clash with Melbourne.

The Storm should be given an ultimatum to hurry up and decide on their 2011 squad. They shouldn't be allowed to mess around and disrupt the player transfer market; it’s bad for their players (like White) as well as players from other clubs who are off contract (like Tommo) who can't get new contracts whilst clubs are waiting for the Storm to make the first move...

Troy Thompson is a great forward and a great bloke who is well respected. Why wouldn't canberra keep him for a another year? Furners need to wake to themselves.

AS a longtime Raiders supporter I have a real soft spot for Troy. He is not flash, but puts in every time he runs on the field. While White would be a great replacement for Logan (if he retires, finally), I would rather see a tradesman like Thompson stay and another of the younger brigade kept with the spare cash. Fensom, Mataora and a couple of the current under 20s would be a good start.

White has youth and fitness on his side and is used to playing with a top grade side - certinly we should pursue any opportunity to get him on board!

Cause, Thommo as great a bloke and servant he has been CAN'T CATCH !!!! he drops the ball just about every game and on a bad day 3-4 times. The key to our form turnaround is ball security.
