The opportunity to give back to his junior rugby league roots could lure Brett White to the Canberra Raiders next season.
But until the Melbourne prop gets a ''tap on the shoulder'' from Storm officials, White is committed to helping rebuild the Victorian club.
White, who grew up in Cooma, confirmed yesterday Canberra was one of his preferred options should the Storm cut him free, despite having two years left on his contract.
The Storm is still trying to figure out how to keep its high-profile stars after it was revealed it had cheated the NRL's salary cap by $3.17million over the past five seasons.
It is projected to be a further $1.3million over the cap next year.
To meet NRL regulations and compete for the premiership in 2011, the Storm needs to cull its roster.
''I've got two years left [in Melbourne] and as it stands I'm committed to those two years,'' White told The Canberra Times.
''But if I wasn't to be at Melbourne next year then one of my preferred options is to be at Canberra.
''If it comes to fruition [that I go to Canberra] it would be a wonderful thing.
''I've always had a desire to put back into my local area and it's been hard to do that from being in Melbourne.
''That's one of the attractions I have for Canberra and me [playing there].''
The Storm play the Raiders at AAMI Park on Sunday.
But White said he had put no timeline on deciding where he will play next year.
Instead, the 28-year-old has put his future in the hands of Storm officials.
And with superstar Greg Inglis likely to join either the Brisbane Broncos or Gold Coast Titans and Brett Finch, Jeff Lima and Ryan Hoffman going to Europe, White may not be forced out.
''It's up to the Storm and I'm letting them guide me in what's best for this team,'' he said.
''Whoever it be that needs to go or stay, the culture we've had down here is team first.
''[Canberra] has a wonderful up-and-coming team and a wonderful culture there.
''There's certainly an attraction [to the Raiders], but at the moment I'm still contracted down here.''
While White waits to be told his future, veteran Canberra prop Troy Thompson is in a similar situation.
Thompson is recovering from a shoulder injury and was not named in David Furner's squad for the clash with Melbourne.
