Woolford back, but going soon English deal to be made soon

25 Apr, 2006 09:42 AM
Canberra Raiders hooker Simon Woolford appears certain to join the English Super League next season after saying yesterday he hoped to confirm his destination with a month.

Woolford will return from a two-week suspension on Saturday night to take his place in the Raiders side to play the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium.

The former captain remained tight-lipped on the details surrounding his playing options for 2007 but said a move to the UK was "a priority".

"A couple of places have got to get their stuff together in the next three or four weeks and within a month I'll have something to confirm," Woolford said.

The NRL Round 8 match-up against an in-form Broncos side will mark the 300th game milestone for veteran forward Jason Croker - the Raiders' most experienced player.

But the 33-year-old is another senior player the club stands to lose to the UK after he raised the possibility of a move overseas late last week.

The pair will share an astonishing 520 first-grade games between them when they take to the field in Brisbane on Saturday.

Raiders chief executive Simon Hawkins said club management and new coach Neil Henry, who will take over from Penrith-bound coach Matt Elliott on November 1, were aware of the experience the squad stands to lose should Woolford and Croker leave the club.

Hawkins said the club was "a good chance" to retain one of the two players for next season but indicated a replacement signing wasn't out of the question.

"If we were looking for someone for next year it'd be very likely it'd be someone in their mid to late 20s as to offer some experience there," Hawkins said. "You don't want a whole team of old blokes and you don't want a whole team of young blokes, we're very conscious of needing a balance.

"In terms of recruitment, we'd add a dimension that is required in terms of some sort of seniority."

Elliott said Woolford's strength in the ruck area would be crucial against Darren Lockyer's Broncos, which have won five of their past six matches.

"I thought Alan Tongue was amazing at hooker for us in the Bulldogs game but Simon does provide us with a bit more option around that part of the field."

Woolford's return to the side allows Lincoln Withers to move back into the halves with Jason Smith, while Craig Frawley's strong form has snared him a centre pairing with David Howell.

Adam Mogg has recovered from a neck injury and will play on the wing, while stand-in hooker Tongue will return to lock forward.

Elliott said the Raiders - who suffered a 24-18 loss in Round 21 last year against Brisbane - would look to target the Broncos' fringe areas rather than its in-form forward pack led by Petero Civoniceva and Shane Webcke.

"The way you play is a little bit inside-out against the Broncos," Elliott said.

"You have your smaller guys around the ball in the middle of the field and you tend to run your bigger guys at the edge.

"It'll be a big challenge for us because a few of their key individuals are playing really good football at the moment, so the guys are going to have to improve a little bit defensively from the last couple of weeks.

"It's not always good to get them before Test matches and State of Origins but I'm excited about the weekend and the prospect of playing them."
