ACT is resigned to missing out on O'Connor

18 Jun, 2009 08:24 AM
The ACT Brumbies will only add another outside back to their playing ranks if the right person comes along, after they missed out on the signature of boom Wallabies fullback James O'Connor.

O'Connor has reportedly agreed to terms to remain at the Western Force next season.

The Brumbies were interested in recruiting the 18-year-old, who will start at fullback for the Wallabies against Italy on Saturday.

But Brumbies boss Andrew Fagan said he had never genuinely believed the club was in the running to snare O'Connor, whose offer from the Force was sweetened by significant third-party payments.

''We firmly believed that he was going to stay in the west,'' Fagan said.

''It's not as if he was actually filling a spot for us ... he had some interest in taking a look at us and if he wanted to come here we would find a spot.

''However him not coming here doesn't mean that we are actually replacing him with anyone else.

''We're very happy with the guys we've got already.''
