Brumbies negotiating $900,000 deal to play pre-season fixtures in Darwin

15 Oct, 2009 08:42 AM
The ACT Brumbies could play an annual Super 14 pre-season fixture in the Northern Territory from 2011.

The potential deal, believed to be worth about $900,000 with the NT Government, would see the side play a practice match in Darwin in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Brumbies chief executive Andrew Fagan was in Darwin yesterday to deliver the proposal to NT Chief Minister Paul Henderson and Sports Minister Karl Hampton.

A final decision is not expected for a couple of months.

The first year of the proposal would co-coincide with the first year of an expanded Super 14 season in 2011, in which the Brumbies will host eight home games.

The club hosts six and seven matches at Canberra Stadium on alternate seasons under the current competition structure.

Should the proposal become a reality, it would undoubtedly spark fresh suggestions the Brumbies were looking to leave the ACT, or at least take more matches interstate.

But Fagan denied that yesterday, reiterating to members and fans the club was going nowhere.

''We're not moving to Darwin, we're not moving to Melbourne, I don't see how the two issues would become joint,'' he said.

''We categorically rule out moving any regular-season games away. We are fully committed to playing all of our regular home games in Canberra and we are not looking to take any away.

''I don't think I can be more blunt than that.
