Brumby accident may spark player curfew

31 Mar, 2009 09:23 AM
A meeting between Brumbies coaching staff and the team’s leadership group today will determine whether an immediate curfew is placed on the players in the wake of Shawn Mackay's horrific accident.

The leadership group – Clyde Rathbone, Mark Gerrard, Nic Henderson, Julian Salvi, George Smith and Stirling Mortlock – met for an hour with management yesterday to discuss the events of the preceding 36 hours.

The coaching staff also met with the 15 players who were at the nightclub with Mackay at the time of the accident, which left him with a broken neck, a broken leg and multiple facial fractures after a car hit him.

The players still out when the incident occurred at 4.15am were Mortlock, Gerrard, Henderson, Smith, Josh Holmes, Salesi Ma'afu, Adam Ashley-Cooper, Christian Lealiifano, Patrick Phibbs, Ben Hand, Gene Fairbanks, Huia Edmonds, Tyrone Smith, Francis Fainifo and Peter Kimlin.

The players were leaving as a group when the crash happened.

All those at the scene then followed Mr Mackay and an ambulance to the hospital.

Brumbies team manager Rob McQuade said a decision on any possible curfews would not be made until more meetings were able to take place.

"There are lots of things to consider," he said.

"The leadership group and staff have met, we'll meet again and a decision will be made down the track on the immediate future regarding curfews, if we decide to make any."

Durban police were yesterday still investigating the incident.

Police spokeswoman Phindile Radebe told The Canberra Times, "As soon as the investigation is finalised and all statements have been received, it will be forwarded to the public prosecution for a decision.

"The investigation is a process. Sometimes that can take weeks."
