Canberra fans rewarded with another Wallabies Test

Canberra fans rewarded with another Wallabies Test

22 Sep, 2009 10:23 AM
Test rugby will return to Canberra in 2010 when the Wallabies host Fiji.

It is the second consecutive year the ARU has granted Canberra Stadium a Test match after the national side played Italy at the venue three months ago.

Next year's match will be played on June 5, a week after the Super 14 final. It will be the Wallabies' first Test of the season and their only one against Fiji.

ARU chief executive John O'Neill said Canberra was again chosen as a Test venue due to the support this year's match received.

On that occasion, 22,468 witnessed the Wallabies beat Italy 31-8 in what was the first Test in the national capital since 2000 when Australia played Argentina.

''Canberra embraced the return of international rugby,'' O'Neill said of the Azzurri match on June 13.

''There was a real buzz about the city and the media coverage was great.

''When it came to deciding where we should stage the Test against Fiji next season, the experience of this year certainly weighed in Canberra's favour.''

The Wallabies based themselves in Canberra in the week leading up to their game against the Italians, generating increased public interest in the match.

The crowd figure for the match exceeded the ARU's expectations, while some other Tests this year attracted less than impressive turn-outs.

ACT Brumbies chief executive Andrew Fagan believed the decision to give the Test to the ACT was a reward to Canberrans for their support of this year's fixture.

''As I said at the time, when you get these opportunities you've got to grasp them,'' Fagan said.

''[The Brumbies] have been rewarded and the people of this city have been rewarded which is great.

''The ARU was rewarded this year with a large crowd to the Canberra Test so we're very very happy that we're getting another one next year.''While Fiji is not as high profile a side as Italy, it became the fairytale team of the 2007 Rugby World Cup with multiple upsets and a flamboyant style of rugby.

Fiji beat Canada, Japan and Wales in its pool matches to be shock qualifiers for the quarter-finals.

It was then tied 20-20 with South Africa in its play-offs encounter before the Springboks eventually won 37-20.

Next year's Canberra fixture will begin a four-match period of inbound Tests for the Wallabies.

Following their first-up match against Fiji they will host England at Subiaco Oval in Perth on June 12 and again the following week at Sydney's ANZ Stadium.

Their final home Test before the Tri Nations will be against Ireland at Suncorp Stadium on June 26.

Yeah great another meaningless test to serve up to the spectators who suppport the most succesfull Rugby franchise in Australia, we deserve better oponents in Canberra, not another lowly ranked team that will disguise the Wallabies to be better than they are as they have shown ever since the Italy test.

Fiji is hardly a reward. I wouldn't even watch this game on tv, especially considering the Wallabies recent performances.
