Gower to join the Azzurri

14 May, 2009 09:30 AM
Craig Gower is set to become a dual international after receiving a call-up into Italy's Test squad to take on the Wallabies in June.

Although Italian officials refused to confirm Gower's selection before the official team announcement in Italy, the former Penrith halfback revealed his inclusion on Australian television.

''Yeah, it's very exciting, you know obviously it was a goal when I first came over here and it's justified our decision to come here and do that,'' Gower said last night. If selected, Gower will join the likes of Lote Tuqiri, Mat Rogers, Wendell Sailor and Timana Tahu who have made the switch from the NRL to international rugby.

The former NSW and Australian representative's inclusion in the Azzurri side is sure to spark further interest in the Wallabies' first hit-out of the Test season against Italy in Canberra on June 13. The Italians then play a second Test against Australia in Melbourne on June 20.

Gower could line-up against the likes of Berrick Barnes or Matt Giteau.

The former Kangaroos half gained a release from NRL club Penrith last year to join French Top 14 team Bayonne, where Italian coach Nick Mallett visited last week to assess Gower's club form.

He qualifies for Italy through an Italian grandfather and because he holds an Italian passport.
