The ACT Brumbies want to see Julian Huxley play multiple matches before they consider offering him a contract extension.
Huxley's three-year deal with the club expires at the end of the season.
He played his first match in two years last weekend after recovering from a brain tumour.
When he suffered the injury in March 2008 he was the incumbent Wallabies fullback and an automatic entrant into the Brumbies starting XV.
Brumbies chief executive Andrew Fagan conceded it was too tough to offer Huxley a contract for 2011 and beyond in the short term.
''We need to see him play. We wouldn't have given him clearance to come back from his setbacks if we didn't think he was up to playing professional rugby again, but it's still about him proving he's got the game sufficient to be a part of our future,'' Fagan said.
''We want to see him play some footy over the course of the next couple of months. We'll make that decision then.''
Huxley had no concerns about his long-term playing future.
The 30-year-old, who will play for the Brumby Runners on Saturday night, was more focused on working his way back into the Brumbies Super 14 team.
