Skipper Hoiles on the verge of returning for Brumbies

13 Apr, 2009 07:59 AM
ACT Brumbies captain Stephen Hoiles is confident of returning to the field for Friday night's crucial match against the Pretoria Bulls.

Hoiles hasn't played since tearing medial ligaments in his knee during the Brumbies 10-point win against the NSW Waratahs on March 13.

The No8 expects to find out either today or tomorrow whether he'll run out onto Canberra Stadium, but said his first task was to impress the coaching staff.

''It's looking OK, I'm feeling pretty good at the moment so hopefully we'll make a decision,'' Hoiles said.

''I've had a couple of good runs but there are still a few boxes that need to be ticked when you come back from this sort of injury.

''I need to get some more agility. I need to test it out under fatigue and during the pressure of team sessions.''

With fellow forward Mark Chisholm out for the season, the inclusion of Hoiles for the Bulls clash will provide the Brumbies with some much-needed firepower up front.

The Brumbies lost 28-17 in the corresponding fixture last year and Hoiles said the match was a must-win for his side's finals prospects.

''Every game is going to be crucial from now,'' he said.

''It's a good challenge to our squad to see how we can approach it after another tough week.

''It doesn't get much better than playing the Bulls, who are one of the in-form teams in the competition at Canberra Stadium playing to keep our season alive.''

Who was the bright spark at Foxtel who scheduled the Brumbies and the Raiders to be on tv at the same time? A 5.30 kickoff is not a usual time for the Brumbies, and the weather showed its disapproval as well!

How does the No.10 keep getting a run? He'll keep kicking it aimlessly away and invite the Bulls into our half. There has been no change to the style since Friend took over - kick it away aimlessly at every opportunity. When the ball does go wide, the forwards keep getting in the way!
