ACT Brumbies want George Smith immortalised in a statue at Canberra Stadium.
A day after announcing he would retire from international and Super14 rugby at the end of the season, Smith was king of the kids at the Brumbies' supporters day yesterday.
He signed autographs, posed for photos and shook hands.
And as if his name wasn't already etched in Australian rugby history with more achievements than any other Wallaby or Brumby, his dedicated fans have a list of suggestions to ensure he is remembered forever.
They want a statue to stand alongside Mal Meninga and Laurie Daley at Canberra Stadium.
The east stand at Canberra Stadium is named in honour of Smith's former Brumbies teammates George Gregan and Stephen Larkham while Canberra Raiders legends Meninga and Daley have statues at the west entrance.
The west stand is also named after Meninga and in the wake of Smith's shock announcement the ACT Government is expected to consider a fitting tribute for the inspirational No7.
Even after more than 100 Tests, 122 Super rugby caps, eight Brett Robinson awards, two John Eales medals and four Super14 player of the year trophies, Smith doesn't think he warrants extra attention.
''The news has been positive from the fans, they're happy for me,'' Smith said.
''Not happy I'm leaving, but happy for my family and the next phase of my life.
''There is a big sense of relief that it has come out in the open and I'm very pleased with the outcome.
''[A statue] would be nice, but I don't play the game for any accolades.''
While most of Smith's fans were upset they would not get to see their hero beyond 2010, they supported his decision. Tim Kinsclla, of Holder, even described the flanker as a ''god''.
''I thought he could have played for another two or three years,'' Kinsclla said.
''My first Brumbies match was his 50th game and I just hope he does well wherever he goes. It's a shame he's going ... you've got to name a stand after him or build another statue because basically, with Stirling Mortlock, he's a god and I just think he's fantastic.''
Scott Mcelroy, who has been supporting the Brumbies for 10 years, agreed a statue was the only fitting tribute for Smith.
''I think he could have exceeded George Gregan in his amount of Wallaby caps,'' Mcelroy said. ''There should definitely be something at [Canberra Stadium].''
But Brumbies coach Andy Friend summed up Smith and his career best.
