Stars begin to align for next generation Brumbies

31 May, 2009 11:56 AM
THERE'S eight months until the ACT Brumbies' first match of the 2010 Super 14 season but already the expectation is building.

Canberra looks set to host Australia's version of a rugby dream team next year and could very well bring home a Super rugby title for the first time since 2004.

Already Matt Giteau arguably the world's best flyhalf is coming home.

He's bringing with him Josh Valentine, a Wallabies scrumhalf.

Star flanker Rocky Elsom, who led Irish club Leinster to a Heineken Cup final victory last week, is as good as signed with the Brumbies.

And James O'Connor, the 18-year-old whose exceptional skills has seen him branded the next superstar of the game, is considering following them to the national capital.

Throw in incumbents such as Stirling Mortlock, Adam Ashley-Cooper, George Smith, Ben Alexander and Stephen Moore and the Brumbies could conceivably have nine starting Wallabies in their team next year.

But it begs the question is such a one-club domination a positive for Australian rugby?

Ask ACT Brumbies chief executive Andrew Fagan and he'll tell you it's a great thing for his organisation.

One could only imagine the sense of satisfaction he felt when Giteau signed with the club earlier this year, or when his phone rang a couple of weeks ago and Elsom was seeking a berth for 2010.

Ask NSW Waratahs, Western Force and Queensland Reds officials and they'll tell you it's probably not such a great thing and that the talent should be more evenly spread.

Ask Tony Dempsey, chief executive of the Rugby Union Players Association, and the answer is more balanced.

Dempsey accepted a Brumbies team laden with stars had the potential to ''severely dent'' the prospects of the other three Aussie Super 14 teams.
