Vikings steal spiteful clash

13 Sep, 2009 11:34 AM
A TIM Curran try and Christian Lealiifano conversion in injury time sparked wild celebrations as the Tuggeranong Vikings stole the John I Dent Cup at Viking Park yesterday.

Forced to play with only 14 men for the last hour of play, the Vikings ended the Queanbeyan Whites' two-year stranglehold on the premiership with a 30-28 victory.

Tuggeranong prop Sione Taula was sent off for his involvement in a fight midway through the first half and the Vikings had to battle on with one less player for the remainder of the match.

Vikings outside centre Ed Stubbs and Queanbeyan No13 Josh Goodall were also sin-binned for fighting.

The boiling tempers were not confined to the field with celebrations turning sour after the final siren and hundreds of supporters from both clubs involved in an ugly altercation on the field.

Tuggeranong fans jumped the fence to celebrate with the players, but were met by angry Queanbeyan supporters and numerous fights broke out.
