Wallabies make four changes for Boks clash

16 Jul, 2008 02:58 PM
Australia have made four changes to their run-on side for Saturday night's Tri-Nations clash against South Africa in Perth.

Nathan Sharpe, Lote Tuqiri and Wycliff Palu all return from injury to take their place in the starting XV and George Smith gets the nod ahead of Phil Waugh at openside flanker.

Tuqiri (knee), Sharpe (groin) and Palu (neck) missed Australia's recent 40-10 demolition of France in Brisbane but have all trained freely this week to earn a recall.

Stephen Hoiles, Dean Mumm and Lachie Turner not only lose their spot in the starting XV but also failed to make the bench.

Lock James Horwill, who copped a knock to the sternum at training yesterday, has been named in the starting XV but fellow second-rower Dan Vickerman will play club rugby again this weekend as he continues to build match fitness after undergoing surgery on his ankle following the Super 14 season.

Wallabies coach Robbie Deans said both the team and Vickerman would have been compromised had he selected the 29-year-old.

"Dan's done really well. He's ahead of schedule," Deans said.

"He managed to get 80 minutes of club rugby in last weekend.

"I think he probably became hopeful with the speed of his recovery but it wasn't a realistic hope.

"He's settled back into getting some strength work done this week and getting some more game time under his belt on the weekend.

"Who knows, he could be a prospect next week."

While there was no room for in-form rugby league convert Timana Tahu, the bolter on the bench is Tatafu Polota-Nau, who has won a spot after making his playing return at club level last weekend for Parramatta.

The NSW Waratahs hooker hadn't played since the Super 14 final loss to the Crusaders in May because of a hand injury.

With Cameron Shepherd ruled out of the series with a broken ankle, Drew Mitchell has earned a place on the bench, while prop Matt Dunning, who missed Australia's Test wins over France with an infected shin, will join him.

Smith will register his 87th Test cap when he lines up against the Springboks, taking him past the career tallies of John Eales and Joe Roff, making him the most capped forward in Australian history and fourth-most capped Wallaby of all-time.

Deans said regaining the likes of Tuqiri, Sharpe and Palu would give the side much-needed experience against a battle-hardened Springboks outfit.

"This is our first Tri-Nations Test and we are conscious of the fact it's going to be a step up from what we've encountered to date," he said.

"When you get into that sort of circumstance, to have as many blokes around you that have got some kilometres on the clock is valuable."
