It is symbolic that Woden Valley Soccer Club's under-14 boys will be flag bearers at the Kanga Cup's opening ceremony on Sunday.
In 12 months the team will represent the ACT region when it joins 1500 rival worldwide sides to contest the Gothia Cup in Sweden.
The under-14 boys team - next year's crop of under-15s - has followed the path of the club's globetrotting under-14 girls team, which finished second at last year's Dana Cup, in Denmark.
Team manager Tracee Allen said next year's Gothia Cup was a chance for the club's boys to experience an international tournament.
"We thought if the girls can to it, why can't we," Allen said.
"I don't think there's too much pressure to live up to what the girls did. They'll try their best."
Woden Valley will run fundraisers during next week's Kanga Cup to fund the 16 players and four officials.
Costs for the two-week campaign are expected to reach $4000 a person.
"It's a lot of money but it will be worth it," Allen said.
"It's a big experience for the players."
As under-13s at last year's tournament, the Woden boys finished third in their pool.
This year they face four other ACT-region teams and an SA side.
"It definitely gets harder year to year because the teams vary in their players," Allen said.
"We're hoping to win this year. The team from Adelaide is probably a representative side so they should be good games."
Capital Football granted the Woden Valley team the chance to be Kanga Cup flag bearer to promote its fundraising efforts.
This year's Kanga Cup - fuelled by Australia's Socceroos World Cup finals appearance - will attract up to 150 teams and 3000 players and officials from across Australia and New Zealand.
The Kanga Cup opening ceremony is scheduled to start at 11am on Sunday at Canberra Stadium. Matches run across the region all week with finals on the following Saturday and Sunday.
The Canberra Times will publish a four-page daily lift-out on the Kanga Cup starting next week.
