 Moore picked for Fed Cup

Moore picked for Fed Cup

08 Apr, 2009 01:00 AM
Young Western Australian Jessica Moore is a surprise selection for the Fed Cup play-off tie against Switzerland later this month.

Moore will replace doubles expert Casey Dellacqua, who has been sidelined due to a shoulder reconstruction.

Moore, who is ranked 140 on the WTA tour, has previously played one Fed Cup tie in Thailand and has a 1-1 singles record.

''I'm feeling good coming into the event,'' Moore said yesterday.

''I've been in Canberra for the last couple of weeks, training at the AIS, and have had some good training sessions. Knowing that I'm going as a singles player and that I might get the chance to play a match is pretty exciting.''

Asked if she was fit and injury free, she said, ''Yes, I'm healthy at the moment, which is exciting and hopefully with a good trip ahead, I still will be after the Fed Cup.''

Australian Fed Cup captain, David Taylor, said that even though Moore would be part of a new push to develop tennis in Australia, Dellacqua would be missed.

''Casey is a big loss to the team because of the fact that she is such a great doubles player,'' Taylor said.

''She's top 20 in the world, been in a Grand Slam final at the French and is also a very good singles player. A lot of versatility she brought to the team is now gone, but fortunately we've replaced her with a good up-and-coming Australian.''

According to Taylor, Australia is favoured for the tie against Switzerland due to the fact the Swiss No1 player Patty Schneider hasn't made herself available.

The strong Australian line-up will include Samantha Stosur, who recently beat the world No2 Dinara Safina and is on the way to her highest ever ranking.

Jelena Dokic, a quarter-finalist at this year's Australian Open, and Rennae Stubbs, Australia's doubles specialist, will also be in the line-up.

The world group two play-off tie against Switzerland will be played in Mildura, Victoria, on April25 and 26.
