Serb's up, Stosur stumbles

28 Jun, 2009 11:07 AM
SAMANTHA Stosur's Wimbledon campaign came to an end when she lost to No13 seed Ana Ivanovic in the third round last night.

The Australian No18 seed was comprehensively beaten 7-5, 6-2 in one hour and 10 minutes.

Ivanovic broke French Open semi-finalist Stosur in the opening game of the match and then held for a 2-0 lead.

The Australian was struggling to make any inroads on Ivanovic's serve, but she finally broke back to even the score at four games apiece.

But Ivanovic made the critical breakthrough in the 11th game, sending a brilliant backhand down the line to go up 15-30 before a double fault from Stosur handed her two break points and another double fault allowed the Serb to serve for the set.

Ivanovic, the 2008 French Open champion, grabbed three set points with her fifth ace of the match, converting the second when Stosur netted a backhand.

The Serbian started the second set as she did the first, breaking her opponent in the opening game, but this time she took a 3-0 lead with a blistering return and her advantage became 4-0 as she was barely troubled on her next service game.

The 21-year-old blew match point on Stosur's serve when she sent a forehand into the net in the seventh game.
