 Shoulder injury forces Jones out

Shoulder injury forces Jones out

17 Dec, 2007 10:13 AM
Alun Jones' Australian Open hopes hit a snag yesterday when he was forced to withdraw from the tournament's wildcard play-off with a shoulder injury.

The 27-year-old will have scans on his right shoulder today after he damaged it in his loss to world number 341 Sam Groth on Saturday.

Groth, 20, beat Jones, the tournament's No1 seed 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.

A tournament physiotherapist told Jones after the loss he had tendonitis in his shoulder and suggested he withdraw from yesterday's match.

"I am really disappointed," Jones told The Canberra Times last night.

"I was playing really good tennis but I guess because I have been playing a lot lately it has built up a bit of tightness in the shoulder.

"I am still confident of making the Open though."

Jones said he damaged his shoulder when he unleashed for a big forehand against Groth.

Jones was scheduled to play West Australian Brydan Klein yesterday who lost to Mark Philippoussis the day before.

"I might need a cortisone injection or something to get back on the court," Jones said. "Maybe followed by a bit of rest and some pills will do it.

"But I'm still in with a shot at making the Open. I have three more chances left."

Jones will need to win a wildcard tournament in Adelaide beginning on Boxing Day and said he would make sure he is fit by then.

Philippoussis' lost to Groth yesterday further dimmed his chances of another Australian Open showing.

Groth beat the former US Open finalist 6-4, 6-3. The youngster broke Philippoussis in the 10th game of the first set and then broke in the second set to lead 4-2.

Philippoussis broke back, but Groth secured another break and then served out the match.

At 194cm tall, Groth was more than able to match Philippoussis for power, and he served more aces in the 1hr, 30min contest.

The top two players from each group in the play-off progress to the quarter-finals, with the eventual tournament winner to receive a wildcard into the Australian Open main draw.

In his his only chance at making the Australian Open, Philippoussis hasn't played an ATP event since injuring his knee in January but took part in an over-30s event in October.

In the women's play-off, Canberra's Allison Bai defeated WA player Brittany Sheed 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, while Jelena Dokic scored a second victory, winning a tough three-set match against experienced Victorian Christina Wheeler 3-6, 7-6 (7-0), 6-3.

The two wins mean Dokic has already booked her place in the quarter-finals. with AAP
