Back me or sack me: Turnbull

02 Oct, 2009 10:28 AM
A THREAT by Malcolm Turnbull to walk away should the backbench defy him over climate change has further entrenched divisions within the Coalition and raised doubts about whether he will be leader beyond Christmas.

Fed up with a group of backbenchers publicly destabilising him over his plan to negotiate with the Government on its emissions trading scheme, Mr Turnbull used three separate interviews yesterday to stress he was not prepared to lead a party that did nothing and said nothing.

''Whether my leadership prevails or not on this issue, time will tell,'' he said.''I could not possibly lead a party that was on a do-nothing-on-climate-change platform.

''If the party room were to reject my recommendations to them, that would obviously be a leadership issue. That's perfectly plain - quite clear.''Gambling the leadership is extremely dangerous but Mr Turnbull said he was confident he would prevail.

''I will secure the party room's support,'' he said.Climate change has become the internal battleground over Mr Turnbull's leadership and both sides of the argument claim to be in the majority.

One Liberal who believes Mr Turnbull's leadership is now untenable because of the threat told the Herald the leader had put a noose around his neck and stood on a chair.

''All we have to do is kick it over,'' he said.An ardent Turnbull supporter said Mr Turnbull had started showing real leadership after realising elements of the party were mired in the past and could not be wooed.

The community was concerned about climate change and the party room rebels were sending the message the Liberal Party did not care.

Mr Turnbull concurred with a swipe at the National Party and rebel Liberals such as Cory Bernardi and Wilson Tuckey.''Anyone who thinks it is electorally wise to have a do-nothing-on-climate-change policy is not in tune with the mood of the nation or the globe.

''Liberals speculating that Mr Turnbull might be gone by Christmas reasoned that Tony Abbott, a conservative, was the only realistic replacement. The shadow cabinet on Wednesday backed Mr Turnbull's intention to try to amend Labor's emissions trading legislation when reintroduced in November.

If the legislation is blocked, Labor will have a trigger for an early double dissolution. Mr Turnbull argues Labor would win such an election and then pass its scheme unamended using a joint sitting of Parliament. Therefore the Coalition should try to seek a better deal for industry and agriculture.

The rebels are demanding he call Labor's bluff and do nothing until at least next year, after an international conference in Copenhagen, by which time other nations' intentions will be better known.Mr Turnbull stressed repeatedly yesterday that negotiating next month did not guarantee there would be a deal. The Coalition's final position would depend on which amendments the Government accepted. ''We may well vote against it,'' he said. Most Liberals are worried about what to do when this moment arrives as it is likely the party room will still be divided.

''For Malcolm, that's the big call,'' said one frontbencher.

Mr Rudd's own 'Union Supporters' have started to place full page Adds in our local newspapers in the Hunter about the 'loss of jobs to overersea's and clearly the flawed ETS as it stands which won't make a % of difference to the climate change issue". It quotes www.newgencoal.com.au and references to www.Cut EmissionsNotJobs.com.au by Australian Coal Association,Canberra. All Turnbull needs to do is 'call on Rudd's 25% goal' as promised- as he downgraded to 5%- "SHOCK"!. The world is serious says Ross Garnalt and quotes on Lateline the efforts and commitments which is making Rudd's 'blame the Liberals' a twist that won't work. He set the goals- we believed him- he changed the goalposts, and all Turnbull has to do is say "Do as you promised, Mr Rudd"- that's a hard call for Rudd to meet as China is setting 25-40%! Let's see his mettle now.

I wonder if Rudd and Gillard together with most state premiers have used the same language to enforce their role as leader? And like all democracies, the parliamentarians have the right to either fall into line, or ask for a spill. With the threat of a double dissolution hanging over their heads, I wonder how many of the liberal parliamentarians will decide to go along with their leader regardless of the ideology on an ETS?

The Malcolm Turnbull of late appears to be threatening to go if his backbench do not abide by his position on climate change. After a year of very poor personal polling; lapses of judgement such as the non-Utegate Affair; on-going leadership speculation; public criticism from Liberal and National colleagues; a personality disorder diagnosis from his former leader; and open party division on the ETS, I think Mr Turnbull is just facing up to the inevitable. He knows is he not suited to the job. He knows he cannot lead and unite the Opposition. He knows many in the shadow cabinet do not like or even support him, many more than just Wilson and Barnaby. Mr Turnbull is simply beginning the process of vacating the position before the next election, an election he and his party know they cannot win. His veiled threat to backbenchers yesterday is all above saving face. Mr Turnbull obviously feels it more acceptable to be rejected by a few outspoken members of one's own family than by the whole country on election night.

he has to look green because he had to suck up to the greenies in his own electorate to win his seat in the last election. the liberal party will never do any good while their leader is more labour than liberal.

The so called rebels have it right. The whole thing is just a con. The main point that shows it up as a con is when those pushing climate change keep saying that burning coal in power stations gives off way more weight in CO2 than the initial coal weight and that cattle and sheep give off way more methane by weight than their feed intake weight. These are ridiculous statements as it is impossible to start with one weight with coal, and take out some energy and end up with a greater weight left over of CO2 and with stock start with one weight of feed, take out some meat and some energy and end up with a greater weight of methane, physically impossible. If the pollies were pushing to reduce pollution, real pollution that is, that would be ok but that doesn't rate a mention because they are so hard trying to get a tax on a so called pollution CO2 without which we would all be dead. They need to be careful as they may get their wish one day and reduce CO2 and then find they are hungary as plants don't grow as well resulting in lower crop yields and therefore less food. So keep pushing rebels and get the reality message across.
