Bridge death: brother asked father to pick up girl 'thrown from bridge'

07 Oct, 2009 02:42 PM
The brother of a girl allegedly thrown by her father from the West Gate Bridge in Melbourne asked if they could turn around and pick her up because she could not swim, a court has heard.

Arthur Phillip Freeman, 36, of Hawthorn, is facing a committal hearing in the Melbourne Magistrates Court today on charges including murder relating to the death of his four-year-old daughter on January 29.

Darcey Iris Freeman died in hospital of brain injuries from drowning, the court has heard.

Chief Crown Prosecutor Gavin Silbert, SC, told the Melbourne Magistrates Court today that Darcey's eight-year-old brother, Ben, asked his father to go back after the incident because his sister could not swim.

The court heard that, on the day of his daughter's death, during a telephone conversation, Mr Freeman told his estranged wife to say goodbye to the children.

"You will never see them again," he allegedly told her.

Witness Barry Nelson told the court that he was the only person to approach the father on the bridge that morning.

Mr Nelson said Mr Freeman was "just going about his business" when he allegedly threw his daughter over the bridge.

"There was no aggression or anything. He had a completely neutral face. It was as if he was just going about his business ... and there was nothing else to it.

"He could have been any person walking through the street."

Mr Freeman then made his way to the Commonwealth law courts and was eventually detained after acting strangely.

The hearing, before magistrate Peter Reardon, continues.

I bet this mongrel gets off with a short stay in a psychiatric facility...he showed intent when he told his wife to say goodbye to the kids...he should be charged with 1st degree murder & locked upto never be released. How can anyone do this to their own child? I have a daughter & not a day goes by when I don't look at her & feel like my heart is going to explode out of my chest with joy & love.
