OzCar affair email 'a fake'

22 Jun, 2009 06:51 PM
The Australian Federal Police revealed this afternoon that the email that sparked the so-called Utegate controversy was faked.

The email was alleged to have been sent from prime ministerial adviser Andrew Charlton to Treasury official Godwin Grech, raising the plight of Queensland car dealer John Grant and his possible access to the taxpayer-funded OzCar scheme.

Mr Grant gave Prime Minister Kevin Rudd a free ute.

The AFP statement came following a raid this morning on the home of Mr Grech and Treasury offices.

Mr Grech has been questioned by the federal police about the fake email.

"Preliminary results of those forensic examinations indicate that the e-mail referred to at the centre of this investigation has been created by a person or persons other than the purported author of the e-mail,'' the Australian Federal Police said in a statement.

The interview with Mr Grech was consistent with these findings, police said. The investigation is continuing.

Senior sources believe that Mr Grech's role in the affair is more complicated than previously thought.

The controversy has dominated proceedings in Parliament today.

Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull moved to censure Treasurer Wayne Swan over his involvement in the OzCar affair but the motion failed along party lines.

The ABC reported today that the federal police are investigating the posssibility that the email was concocted within the Treasury department.

However, it was reported that police are now investigating a potential link between Paul Lindwall - who left Mr Turnbull's office after the May budget and has worked for Treasury - and Mr Grech.

Mr Grech was kept in a safe house over the weekend by the federal police.

Will 'the real fake' stand up? whether it was a 'sent to' and 'time sent' and 'from which e box' - How does one fake a title heading as time of day, sneders e box and receivers e box is always on all my emails unless 'undisclosed receipant'. If I dial 1831 before a phone number it 'blocks' the other from knowing who is ringing- But how does one produce a 'fake email'? The only fake is the PM who wants us to go into serious national debt to 'recover the world' and set up his own Govt banking system to eliminate the private banking companies. He suceeded this division in 12/12Oct.'08 then was forced to create a slush fund finance called AusCar as "private banking can't be trusted- he thinks".

this reeks of a desperate opposition who don't have the ability to debate the government on real issues

producing a fake email is simplicity itself if you have some degree of technical knowledge. look at all the phishing emails purporting to be from one bank or another that you get every day. if you have problems with rudd, fine, but this whole ozcar thing is a joke and i'm a bit surprised that turnbull didnt bother to make certain of its authenticity before he hitched his wagon to it...

Still sitting at home yelling at the computer, adaptapensioner? Why don't you branch out a bit? Enrol in a TAFE course, join a local club, read some books (and by that I mean books OTHER THAN the free ones handed out by Armageddon crazies on the street corner). You might even meet a nice lady, settle down... Eventually you'll forget all about the times you used to hit F5 all day on the Canberra Times, attempting to join the dots between the endless anti-everything conspiracies in your head. Or to rephrase all that (and as Al so eloquently put it) - Who cares?

adaptapensioner.com - it's dead easy to fake an email. A quick google of 'email spoofing software' got over 900,000 results.

1 billion human beings are starving and yet Turnbull is still flogging this concocted dead horse while the media seem to have completely forgotten that answering requests from constituents is most of the work politicians are paid to do. Turnbull is a fool.

This is a beat-up. As an ex-public servant it has been standard procedure for 30 years to prioritise replies to representations in the following order: from other Ministers (including on behalf of their constituents), 1-2 weeks; from constituents of one's own Minister, 2-3 weeks; the general public, 4-6 weeks. It does not change the rules applied in the case of funding applications (Public Servants are more careful than that) but it can lead to speedier consideration. I used to advise people awaiting a decision to write to the Minister because at least that way there was a quicker deadline for a response - although I would also advise that it may not be the answer they wanted but at least an answer from which they could then decide their next step. In the current case, even if such an e-mail exists it appears no more than standard operating procedure.
