The affected flight, QF1466, departed at 9.15am before experiencing problems in one of its engines.
"The Bombardier Q400 aircraft operating QF1466 from Canberra to Sydney experienced an engine problem following departure," Qantas confirmed in a statement.
"The engine was shut down and the aircraft returned to Canberra, landing without incident at 10:50am. There were 74 passengers on board."
Passengers onboard the QantasLink flight told The Canberra Times that power appeared to have been lost in one engine during take off.
The aircraft was passing Goulburn when it was announced the plane would have to return to Canberra.
A passenger who looked out a window when the announcement was made said one propeller had stopped turning.
Fire engines were in position on the tarmac when the plane landed a short time later.
A spokeswoman for Canberra Airport said the plane landed safely, and described the single-engine landing as "textbook".
The Qantas statement said all passengers had since disembarked and would be accommodated on the next available flight, while the plane in question remains grounded.
"Engineers are inspecting the aircraft to determine the cause of the issue," the statement said.
ACT Brumbies chief executive Andrew Fagan tweeted that he was also on the flight.
"Engine failure @QantasAirways flight frm Canberra - Prop stopped spinning few kms in the air. Not a wonderful sight!" he said.
"Landed safely with 1 prop. Now have to work out how to get to Darwin for @BrumbiesRugby match given connection missed #frustratingbutimalive".
