Teachers pay study reforms

17 Aug, 2009 01:00 AM
Teachers' pay should not be dictated by the results of their students, a new report says.

Commissioned by the former Howard government, the Rewarding Quality Teaching report by management consultant group Gerard Daniels looked at ways to maintain and improve the quality of Australian teachers through recognition and reward.

The report, issued yesterday, found there was no support for a teacher reward system based solely on the results of their students.

Rather, any reward scheme should be affordable, easily accessible, meaningful to teachers and grounded in clearly established, evidence-based criteria.

According to the report, all contributing business and education groups were concerned that a poorly crafted rewards system would lead to teachers engaging in narrow teaching practices or ''tactical behaviour'' that could end up undermining outstanding performance.

Federal Education Minister Julia Gillard said the report would form the basis of reforms to teacher pay arrangements. AAP
