Canberra Raiders five-eighth Terry Campese has conceded his World Cup campaign is over.
The Kangaroos debutant played just 16 minutes on Sunday night before his right eye was injured in a tackle by former teammate Neville Costigan.
The 24-year-old visited an eye specialist yesterday and was told to rest this week. Campese will remain with the Kangaroos squad in Sydney
"There is no permanent damage, I've just been told to rest up, it bled again the night it happened, so I'll visit another specialist just to make sure there are no more bleeding issues, and hopefully it comes out 100per cent," he said.
Despite staying in camp, Campese did not expect to play again during the tournament.
The Kangaroos play Fiji in a semi-final on Sunday night.
If, as expected, the side defeats the flamboyant islanders, the Kangaroos will play in the final against either New Zealand or England on November22.
"I'm pretty disappointed, there has been no discussion officially about my chances, but hopefully I'll get another chance later in my career, I'll just wait for the specialist and make sure the eye is right."
Campese said he could not remember much of the 16 minutes he played against Papua New Guinea, but soaked up every moment of the lead-up to the clash in Townsville.
"It was just the hype it was very exciting, as soon as that jumper went on I couldn't wait to play.
"Then we sang the national anthem and it was pretty good. I don't know how many were there but the whole crowd was singing it, and to have the family, fiance and friends in the crowd, it was pretty good."
And despite being shattered to miss out on a full game, Campese holds no ill-feeling to former Raider Costigan.
Costigan, who will likely take a one-match ban after being charged for a careless high tackle, said he had little sympathy for Campese.
But Campese said the injury was just bad luck.
"I doubt very much that he's tried to intentionally hurt me, he's a good bloke and we are mates, that's footy, these things happen when you play contact sports."
Meanwhile, fellow Raider and Australian teammate Joel Monaghan will today find out if he has retained his position in the starting side.
The outside back has played in all three World Cup matches for the Kangaroos, and believes he has done enough to hold his spot.
"I thought I might get a game against Papua New Guinea at best if we won the first two games, so to play in all three is amazing and something I didn't think would happen," Monaghan said.
"I just want to keep improving every game.
"Hopefully that keeps me in the side."
