 Farina beaming at signings

Farina beaming at signings

01 Aug, 2008 04:29 PM

Over two days this week, Queensland Roar's A-League aspirations have solidified to such an extent even coach Frank Farina has begun making bold predictions.

Charlie Miller today confirmed he plans on staying in Queensland for the next two seasons after extended negotiations concluded with his prized signature. 24 hours earlier Reinaldo ended his Korean nightmare by gladly accepting terms in Brisbane.

The lanky Brazilian who tops the club's all-time goal-scoring ladder returns having signed a three-year contract. It's believed Queensland beat off competition from the Newcastle Jets and Gold Coast United for his signature.

The double swoop had Farina beaming today, pleased his restraint in the face of the imminent A-League kick-off had won out over hurried purchases.

"With the signings we've made I believe we can push for the title," he exclaimed. "I came here to win something. We went ever so close last year and this season I'll go on record and say we want to win the league."

The mixed bag offered by Reinaldo is of course no secret to Farina. But perhaps neither is the special combination of skills Miller will bring to a youthful squad.

The Scot comes highly recommended by long-time buddy Craig Moore, a player who Miller has been friends with since the pair broke into an all-star Rangers side as teenagers.

Not only has he known Moore for 15 years, he shares the Queensland skipper's thirst for success. The Glaswegian, a neighbour of Moore during his time in Scotland, has five Scottish Premier League winners' medals in his collection to prove it.

"I'm not going to say I'm going to do this or that. I'm just here to do well for the team," said the 32-year-old. "It's not about me - it's about the whole team trying to win the league this season."

But can Queensland Roar supporters dare to hope?

Most will remember Shin Tae-Yong's brief A-League impact in season one. Or Osvaldo Carro and Marcus Wedau, not to mention last season's playmaking import Marcinho.

Admittedly Farina had influence over only one of those indifferent arrivals with Marcinho last year seemingly oblivious to the art of picking out a better-positioned team-mate. But regardless, the former Socceroos boss ranks Miller a superior number 10.

"That's something we haven't had in my period of time at the club - a genuine out-and-out playmaker who can create opportunities. It's good to have that string to our bow now," said Farina.

Miller insisted he felt no added pressure from such admiration. Whether Farina retains the 4-3-3 system so successfully deployed midway through last term or reverts to two strikers as he's tinkered with in pre-season, Miller will be in the starting side.

"I'm 32 years old now. Maybe when I was 18 I felt the pressure," he said

That, in a nutshell, is why Farina spent such a serious amount of time running his eye over the month-long trialist after a proposed reunion with former Rangers midfield team-mate Ian Ferguson at the Central Coast Mariners collapsed.

In Robbie Kruse, Michael Zullo, Tahj Minniecon, Mitch Nichols, Isaka Cernak and Tommy Oar, Queensland have the legs. Now, fans hope, they have the brain.

Miller hinted he's a fortnight away from playing 90 minutes, but to his credit he looked a trimmer player today to the one who enjoyed an influential half-hour cameo against Palmeiras last month.

What's more, you can be certain the conditioning program will only ramp up after the Roar's final pre-season cup game against the Mariners this Sunday.

Last year Farina was seething after his side claimed a paltry five points from the opening six rounds and, with the club languishing second-bottom of the ladder, rang the changes. This year he doesn't want to rely on a similar mid-season renaissance to stay in touch.

"The season's short and if you get off to bad start it makes it very hard to catch up," he said. "We're hoping that we're in good shape now and when the season comes around we want to hit the ground not running but sprinting."
