Hunt has swine flu but Broncos will play

11 Jun, 2009 03:36 PM
The Broncos have reacted angrily to an NRL decision to force tomorrow night's game against the Bulldogs to go ahead, despite the fact Brisbane fullback Karmichael Hunt has tested positive to swine flu.

NRL chief operating officer Graham Annesley this afternoon told reporters he was advising the game go ahead, despite the Broncos' objections.

"I'm advising that the game tomorrow night will be proceeding," Annesley said.

"That's on the advice we've received that by game time tomorrow night it will be sufficient time in quarantine to minimise the risk of any spread of infection.

"We realise this creates a difficulty for the Broncos in terms of preparation time however this is a wider issue than just rugby league, this is a community health issue."

Queensland Health chief health officer Dr Jeannette Young said despite earlier reports Broncos players would not be out of quarantine in time for the match, they would not be stopped from taking part.

Dr Young said players had started taking Tamiflu on Tuesday night and "plus or minus a few hours doesn't matter".

Annesley said Broncos CEO Bruno Cullen had made clear his disappointment with the decision.

"I've been in constant contact with Bruno. When I spoke to Bruno earlier today he was clearly not happy with the decision to play but he understands that the NRL has to make these decisions.

Brisbane had tried to have the match postponed until Sunday with its players quarantined and unable to train since Monday as it awaited the results of swine flu tests on Hunt.

Queensland Health said earlier today it had no power to stop players from taking part in the match and, while it will offer advice, any decision on whether the game proceeds as scheduled rests entirely with league officials.

The Bulldogs are set to fly to Brisbane this afternoon and want to play the Friday night match.
