One-way traffic for fleet-footed Cats to escape Hawks' clutches

25 Jul, 2008 01:00 AM

TONIGHT'S AFL match-up between premiership big guns Geelong and Hawthorn has provided spirited betting with Hamish Davidson's Sportsbetting.com.au.

"It's all one-way traffic with the money for the Cats," Davidson said.

"They were dominant in beating the Western Bulldogs last week and Hawthorn struggled when losing to St Kilda."

Sportsbook.com.au spokesman Howard Creagh said Richmond have been the best-backed side with his agency with bets of $10,000 at $1.85, $8000 at $1.80 and $6000 at $1.91 on them to cover a 6.5-point start against Brisbane. Creagh said the handicap was adjusted to -9.5 points due to the heavy support. Millions on NRL round Last weekend's NRL round went down in the TAB Sportsbet record books with two matches holding in excess of $1 million.

"Manly against Parramatta last Friday night held $1.13m while Melbourne and St George Illawarra held $1.44m," TAB spokesman Glenn Munsie said.

In round 20 betting Munsie said Sunday's heavyweight clash between Manly and the Sydney Roosters was the "tightest betting match of the round" with the Sea Eagles slight firmers into $1.85 favourites while the Roosters are at $1.95.

Alan Eskander's Betstar.com.au has taken plenty of money for the down and out Parramatta Eels to account for cellar dwellers North Queensland in tonight's match at Parramatta Stadium.

"The Eels just can't seem to snatch a win at the moment but this week may be the one," he said. "The Cowboys' defence is very ordinary at the moment and the Eels should win."

Eskander added that Newcastle were popular with punters to beat South Sydney on Sunday.

"Newcastle were probably a little unlucky last week against Cronulla with a few decisions going against them and the bubble seems to have burst with Souths' defeat against the Wests Tigers," he said. Hackett out in front Swimming events dominate the early Beijing Olympic Games markets with 15 events available with TAB Sportsbet. Australians are favourite in five markets, with Grant Hackett $2.85 for the 400m freestyle and $1.55 for the 1500m. Eamon Sullivan is at $1.95 for the 50m freestyle while Libby Trickett heads the 100m freestyle and butterfly markets at $1.33 and $1.22 respectively. Shark tunes up in style Sportingbet Australia chief executive Michael Sullivan is adamant Greg Norman looks great value at $8 to win this weekend's Senior Open Championship at Royal Troon.

"Third place in the British Open is tremendous form for this event," Sullivan said.

"And Norman did say before the British Open that he was using Royal Birkdale as a tune-up for this event."

Meanwhile, Sullivan added that Sportingbet Australia punters have supported the Wallabies as outsiders in early betting on tomorrow night's Bledisloe Cup game at ANZ Stadium.

"We did take one bet of $4000 on the Wallabies at $2.30 as soon as the odds were posted," he said. "But I'd expect the absence of Stirling Mortlock to lead the big punters towards the All Blacks." THE BEST BET Sydney (-15.5) against Adelaide at $1.91 with Sportsbook.com.au.
